Wyoming Sportsmen Petition for Two-Day Deer Season in County

In Fayette County a two day deer season was urged by Wyoming County sportsmen. A countywide meeting in Pineville backed the request, naming W. F. Diamond as chair and C. L. Cook as secretary, with clubs from Marianna Mullens McGraws Baileysville and Pineville supporting open hunting and appointing honorary game protectors to curb illegal doe killings. The message asks the State Conservation Commission to include Wyoming County in the southern counties open for a two day season next December.

Bowyer Rites to Be Held Sunday

Funeral services for Private First Class Basil Bowyer will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Green Valley Methodist Church Danese with military rites and burial in Beckley’s American Legion Cemetery. Bowyer born October 31 1915 in Danese was 28 when he died in Normandy on June 22 1944. Survived by Ernest and Ruby Lee Bowyer and sister Mrs Anna Mae Thomas of Danese the body will be moved to his sister’s home at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Local residents visit family and travel over weekend

Layland and Beckley area residents are noted visiting relatives and traveling. Mrs. Ida Eherke of Layland visited daughter Mrs. Dossie Maliskie in Minden. Mrs. Lawrence Lester returned from Beckley Hospital after a few days. John and Ses Campbell of Summerlee called on daughter Mrs. Ralph Jacobs in Layland. Evelyn Redden of Layland visited her mother Mrs Roxis Redden in New. Elva Harvey visited her father and mother on Layland Heights. Mrs. Howard Bennett returned from a monthlong visit with her sister.

Two building permits were issued Wednesday totaling 20000 dollars. J A Radwan received permission to erect a brick limestone block and native stone business building 40 by 98 feet on Guyandelle Avenue opposite Worrells Cut Mate, near Guyandotte River and Slab Fork Creek, Lambert Addition. Robert Frye of Mian was granted a five room residence on Lot 48,1 Virginia Street Goose Hollow, 26 by 24 feet, about 6000 dollars, with a block foundation and frame upper structure.

Fayette County Circuit Court may move the murder case of Lemuel Thomas Steed against L. B. McClung to a different county. Steed cites mob violence, threats to his family, and extensive newspaper coverage as reasons for a venue change. Hearing before Judge R. J. BPW Club Plans August Outing at Oak Hill Park

The Business and Professional Woman's Club executive board set a picnic for August 9 at Oak Hill Little Beaver Park with members meeting at 6 pm at the city terminal. A menu committee will be appointed and August outing details discussed at the Wednesday meeting hosted by Miss Clara Payne. A baseball practice night is scheduled for July 26 at 6 30 pm at the local stadium and all members should attend to learn the rules. Funeral services set for Private James E. Evans

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Sunday for Private James E. Evans who died in a field hospital November 28 1944 after being wounded leading a platoon in Hurtgen Germany. Burial in Highlawn Cemetery Oak Hall with American Legion Post 103 Mount Hope in charge. Evans attended Mt Hope schools and worked for New River Company at Oakwood. He was born March 13 1915 in Elk Ridge, son of T C and Edith Evans, survived by his parents one brother Floyd and three children James E Carl and Dianna.

John H. Thompson a 66 year old Layland resident died Wednesday night after a lengthy illness at a Oax Hill hospital. Funeral services will be at 2 p m Saturday at Layland Heights Church with Rev Bill Houthins of Kling. Burial in Ens Cemetery Red Sulphur Springs. Survived by two daughters Mrs Vella Dolson and Mrs Allene Wood four sons Luther John Paul and Willard also three brothers two sisters and twenty one grandchildren. Wife Dreuzilla Ennis Thompson died in 1941. Body to be moved to Thompson home Layland today. The drowning victim Russell Lee Thompson was his son.
