Former Area Mine Inspector Now in Alaska
Robert Calvert, longtime Mt. Hope Bureau of Mines inspector, now in Alaska, surveys coal deposits from nine to fifty feet thick. He notes two small Anchorage mines producing about 650 tons daily, with seams averaging 35 degrees and one mine prone to spontaneous combustion. He describes Santrana mine as sealed in places due to burning coal and reports four strip pits in the territory. Calvert cites high living costs in Alaska and wages of $3.60 per hour for face workers in bituminous coal, $3.24 in sub bituminous, with Anchorage a growing city of about 30,000 near Cook Inlet.
