Mary Kathryn Mahan was selected head majorette of Collins High School by draw last week. Other majorettes include Nina Burgess Judy Flint Pat Richards Charlotte Caldwell Myra Cook Deanne Wilkerson Jean Nobel and Donna O'Dell. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs W U Mahan of Chestnut Avenue and participates in the band Thespian Girls Athletic Assn Latin Club and is a commercial student. Band practice starts Aug 8 with prep at 1 p.m. and senior at 6:30 p.m.

City Council Fires Shirey Dye To Head Hinton Police
Hinton City Council dismissed Police Chief Charles H. Shirey after he served since January and as acting chief since 1952. Retired State Police sergeant C. B. Dye was chosen to fill the vacancy as Acting Sgt. Bobby Wheeler will lead until Dye returns from vacation. The move followed questions over Shirey’s Civil Service status and firing was stated as a change from the mayor and council. Dye is to arrive Sunday to assume duties.

Pineville officials rehired Bill Bolt as police chief for another year, his tenth in that role, during a Monday night meeting. The council also rehired officer Paul, while discussing Bitterview Addition lots, street paving plans by Ritterview Lumber Co, and sewer work by Center Public Service District. The group approved a 400 foot 24 inch sewer pipe for Crowley Avenue to address conditions and serve Bitterview homes, with Pineville Municipal Water Works to supply water. Visitors attended the regular meeting.

Fayette County gains 63.18 with 3362.45 still owed to the sheriff from justice of the peace and constable collections. Prosecuting Attorney J Zane Summerfield sent letters to principals and their sureties noting discrepancies between their accounts and audits by the tax commissioner. Letters dated June 15 gave a 30 day response and payment window. one account has been paid and a firm promise noted.
