Job Totals Down for Eighth Consecutive Month in State
West Virginia manufacturing employment fell for the eighth consecutive month covering May 15 to June 15. The decline reached about 13 percent, led by metalworking trades, with chemicals down 2.6 percent and stone, clay and glass products off 1 percent. Non manufacturing jobs rose 0.2 percent. The state service noted a momentum slump in metalworking but expected a modest improvement for two to four months as retail trade softens toward fall. By end of June, 41,327 people sought work through the State Employment Service, about 20,000 more than a year earlier, with June increases due in part to school-year entry and layoffs.
