Local enlistments reach record in Beckley station
The Beckley Army and Air Force Recruiting Station posted the highest enlistment total to date with 32 area men signing up for regular service. Captain James C. Mathis attributed the surge to a July peak, mining industry schedules, high school graduates seeking a brief post school break, and relaxed entry requirements for mental testing. Enlistees were sent to Fort Knox, Kentucky, after muster at the station. The list includes Start E. Christian, Robert D. Linville, William E. Tyter, George W. Oral, and many others from Brooks to Pineville.

Sophia Council to Decide on Town Power Plant
The Sophia Town Council will decide at the next meeting whether to operate a town power plant or renew a contract with a current supplier. Mayor Elgie Ballard said the old contract expired last November and a final decision has been postponed. Ballard announced after a volunteer fire department meeting that the town will run a volunteer fire system using a local corporation’s equipment, with M. F. Walls named assistant fire chief. Fire drills will be held at the station on Mondays for several weeks to train volunteers. Residents are urged to cooperate with the Fire Department for better service. The board meets at 7 30 p.m. in Room 10 of the Memorial. In October a drive by Duncan may be county-wide or local to Reckiex. Fire calls reach 3173 or 21003.
