Veteran Seeks Release From GI Loan Liability
A veteran selling his home should contact the Veterans Administration to seek release from liability on his GI loan under a 1956 law. If the purchaser meets credit requirements and assumes the loan, the government guaranty remains. Release does not absolve the veteran from the lender. VA assists by providing the buyer's credit report to the lender and guiding the veteran through the process, though a nominal processing fee may be charged by the lender.
