Mirror in bank elevator sparks odd rivalry and aging folk tales
The Raleigh County bank building elevator houses a mirror installed by Ash Mankin to gaze at his own features. He and jailer A. M. Godbey swap duties to adjust the mirror for visibility. Uncle Jake Jarrell of Horse Creek turns eighty, and a local note recalls a birthday in April. A sign on Kanawha Street hints at C. L. Heaberlin Howard-Phipps, established 1898, as Billy Smith notes a language quirk about cactus plural.
