The United Steelworkers strike halts 90 percent of U S steel production as 500000 workers walk out across the nation. West Virginia and Pittsburgh areas report mass layoffs in coal, railroads, and related industries.
Lacy Luther Jamison 63 of Minden died in a Beckley hospital after an extended illness. A World War I veteran and former miner, he served as Sunday school superintendent at East End Gospel Tabernacle Oak Hill. Survived by wife Rose and children Lacy Jr Harold Margie Lois Doris. brothers Paul Roy Roscoe Pete. sister Mae. Funeral Friday at 2:30 p.m. at East End Gospel Tabernacle with burial in Highlawn Memorial Park. Body to be moved from Tyree Funeral Home to residence Thursday.
J H Walker of Vance Drive was arrested at 12 40 p m by city police and charged with drunk driving no operator s license and no city license He is held in Raleigh County Jail Marvin Redden of Beaver was booked by a deputy sheriff on a felonious assault charge and placed in Raleigh County Jail at 12 40 p m
A Beatrice Unthank check was received by Durham tax officials but could not be accepted. The check is being returned to Mrs. Unthank, who resides in Durham New York.

Extended outlook shows normal temperatures with limited day to day change and rainfall totaling 1 to 2 inches plus. Beckley and Oak Hill highs and lows listed with today’s readings. River conditions at Bellepoint report Greenbrier low and clear and Bluestone Reservoir normal and clear with gates partly open. Sgt Eugene Carpenter to arrive August 15 in Beckley to replace Sgt Antonio Junco as supervisor of the Southern West Virginia recruiting district. both currently on leave, with transfer orders pending.

President Eisenhower said current conditions do not warrant using Taft Hartley to end the steel strike or curb stockpiles. He urged free bargaining for a quick contract, noted the 80 day injunction proviso, and stressed no government action unless national health or safety is threatened. He also commented on Geneva talks and Castro unrest while opposing inflationary wage hikes.

Mrs. Phyllis Hereford of 410 Pike Street began duties today as a public health nurse in the Raleigh County Health Department. She succeeds Miss Sally Ramey who resigned in June after training at St. Mary's Hospital in Clarksburg.
Raleigh County Circuit Clerk Harold Hanks will join county ballot commissioners this afternoon to plan the ballots for the special levy election July 27 as authorized Tuesday by the County Court. Also present are Paul Fourney and Tom Canterbury.
The State Geological and Economic Survey Morgantown prepared county boundary maps forwarded to county clerks. Monongalia received the first from Dr. Paul H. Price. A State Folio of Maps showing county boundaries is on file with the secretary of state and legislative auditor. The act of February 13 1959 required legal descriptions and proper certification for all state county boundaries. Earlier descriptions from pre 1863 Virginia Acts were vague, leading to legal questions. The legislature funded new official maps to remove the cloud and provide adequate descriptions.
Marshall College and Cabell-Huntington Hospital will offer a two year professional nursing course starting next year. Students will earn an associate in science while completing college work on campus and clinical training at the hospital. The program will be underwritten by Cabell-Huntington for the director’s salary and expenses.
Sherwood Glutz quips that a man cannot do two things at once and earn as much as two cents worth of soap after a hard day. He adds that women also err by trying to do two things at once such as gaining weight and wearing slacks simultaneously.
The Senate passed the 40 billion defense measure 90 to 0, adding 39.6 billion new money and 450 million in transfer authority. It includes 380 million for a nuclear powered carrier and 405 million to modernize the Army, with some provisions misaligned to Eisenhower’s ask and potential future cuts in conference. The chamber saw tied votes, extended debate, and possible further reductions on foreign aid and other big money bills as 1959 appropriations proceed.
Beckley Curtain Callers plan tryouts at 7 30 p m today in the workshop at Temple and Whitestick streets. President Gene Hall says the first show of the season will be Night Must Fall which helped launch Robert Montgomery’s career.

He outlines promoting electricity, building an intermediate market, backing a National Fuels Policy Act, and boosting public goodwill for coal.
AP reports a New York fashion show for the American exhibition in Moscow dropped two wedding scenes featuring interracial couples after protests from more than 40 newspaper editors. Originally three scenes were planned. only the cathedral wedding with white couple and Negro guests remains. Shirley Goodman of the Fashion Industries Presentation Committee cited time limits and protests as reasons for edits. Edits drew editors from across regions including Northwest, South, Midwest, Southwest and Far West.
New York AP reports the Steel Workers Union asks industry to submit strike issues to a fact-finding board led by a neutral chosen by Chief Justice Warren. The move aims to resolve labor tensions without immediate walkouts.
Detroit AP reports auto manufacturers can survive a 90 day steel strike with minimal impact. Auto firms hold large steel stockpiles and about one million 1959 models are already built and ready for sale, enough to last roughly 60 days. Chrysler plans 1959 output end by August, GM by August, Ford by September, with Rouge plant cited as key capacity.
A bus returning 90 campers from a mountain day camp lost its brakes on a grade in Arcadia California and careened through a tree lined street overturning after slamming into multiple cars. A 3 year old girl Corrine Matson was killed when thrown from a sedan hit from behind by the bus. Two adults in the smashed cars were injured and the driver Brady Bolt of Los Angeles said he had no horn no air and no brakes. The vehicle carried 9 Catholic Youth Organization campers and eight counselors returning from San Gabriel Mountains.
An unsigned Huntington letter renews a $1,000 reward for information in the August 20 1953 murder of Juliet Staunton Clark widow of the Charleston Daily Mail publisher. Investigators questioned several people who were released. The Clark estate admins placed ads in Huntington papers based on the anonymous note.
Vernon E. Hardison 46 of Boone North Carolina a veteran construction foreman was fatally injured while working on Interstate 4. He was struck on the head by a rock and died of a skull fracture and brain injury. He had been supervising rock breaking with a crane and stood about 50 feet away from the crane when struck. Hardison had been with Nelle L Teer Co of Durham for 20 years and had brought his wife and two daughters here about a month ago.
Gov and Mrs Underwood welcomed their third child a baby girl weighing 6 pounds 13 ounces born at 8 30 a m in Charleston hospital The couple already has Cecilia Ann G and Craig Hall Underwood as their other children
