George Cole, long bedded by illness at Beckley hospital, has returned to his daughter Mrs. Glen Cochran’s home in Coal City. He is able to be upright but not fully recovered.
Paris Missouri Prosecutor Tom Proctor announced the recovery of 1930 dollars allegedly taken from Mrs. Dennis Kelly a 45 year old church worker found dead in the Mississippi near Louisiana Missouri The money was said to have been given by Miss Myra Hanan who has lived with Rev C E Newton since childhood Newton 51 was charged with the slaying and denies involvement Proctor stated the money described as valuable papers was handed to Hanan when Newton left to officiate at a funeral
A hearing for the Rev. Monta H. Ball will be held tomorrow to discuss bond for his release from the county jail. The jury failed to reach a verdict last week and no decision on bond has been made since.
Southern West Virginia Land Company will open a new subdivision Saturday between Sophia and Crab Orchard called the Gulf Highway Addition. The Stephens property spans 28 acres to be divided into lots and truck farms, with other holdings including 66 acres near Maple Fork and 21 and 20 acre tracts near Dry Hill school. Incorporators are Lacy Trump, W. T. Lilly, O. F. Cook, D. B. Jarrell, R. L. Manxell, and O. C. Canterbury. The company, chartered last week, is two years old and plans expansion.
CIO attorneys accuse the state attorney's office of anti union policy as the coroner's inquest into ten deaths from the Memorial Day steel strike rioting proceeds. Four union lawyers interrupt to insist the office is not taking sides but performing its official duties during witness questioning.
In Decatur Alabama jurors weighed the Scottsboro case of Clarence Norris for a ninth time in six years. The state sought the death penalty after Norris faced two earlier death sentences overturned by the U S Supreme Court. As the jury began deliberations attorneys moved to select a new defendant, Charles Weems.
Raleigh county 4 H club members will attend their county camp at Camp Campbell on the Greenbrier river August 9 to 14 under director H B Thomas. Ninety eight attended last year. Two instructors will be supplied by West Virginia University. At least 20 adult leaders will teach classes in crafts music games nature and other subjects. Participants must have completed projects or be in good standing. Activities include crafts first aid swimming and rope making with four Indian tribes and evenings fireside programs culminating in a winner’s announcement.
City police resolved a Tuesday shooting mystery after reviewing an earlier phone tip. A negro youth reportedly shot his mother in the foot accidentally, then misled officers about an East Park scene. State police had received a separate East Park report but found nothing further. The involved names were not learned.
The Rev. Herndon Hungate will conduct services at the Church of God here Wednesday night. He will preach at Jonden Thursday night and at Coal City Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock. He returned Tuesday from Bristol where he conducted three services Sunday and Monday.
The Raleigh Realty company bought 14 Parkview lots in Beckley from Everett and Alma Nugen recorded today. Numerous transfers followed including Marguerite and Frank Fister selling three Fifth Avenue lots to Howard Phipps, and Bair Bros. selling two Church Street and Logan Turnpike lots to R. T. Bair. Multiple parcels changed hands on Harper road and Glen Daniel, with family graveyard transfers noted for Rosa Godby’s family. Prices include 500 dollars for two Harper road lots and 8 189.5 square feet conveyed to Helen and A. P. Leebers.

Ernest Fink of Coal City had a finger amputated at the Winding Gulf mine Saturday night. Another finger was seriously injured but doctors believed they could save it. Fink said the injured hand is very painful.
An explosion at the Baker coal mine near Sullivan Indiana trapped about 20 miners. Four men were rescued with severe burns and taken to a Sullivan hospital as rescue crews pressed to recover the trapped others. Origin of the blast remains undetermined two miles from the mine entrance.
Union officials said about 8000 trucks statewide were idle in a midnight strike for higher wages. J. M. O'Laughlin, business agent for the Detroit local of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Chauffeurs, Stablemen and Helpers, estimated 40,000 to 50,000 workers involved. The stoppage affects only intra state shipments.
Three young Soviet airmen Pilot Mikhail Gromoss Co-pilot Andrei Wumosheff and Navigator Sergei Danilin arrived in San Diego after landing at March Field and being taken from a cow pasture. They planned a civic luncheon and then a drive to Los Angeles for a welcome.
In Connellsville Pennsylvania leaders of non striking miners appealed for state motor police protection saying about 600 pickets formed around Republic Steel coal mine property. E B Winning general manager said company employees fired tearing at striking miners to eject them from Davidson mine property.
New York reports a modest securities market session with fractional declines for United States Steel, General Motors, Chrysler, American Can, Standard Oil of New Jersey, New York Central, and Lowe's. In contrast small gains were seen by Montgomery Ward, National Distillers, and Western Union.
Four year old Martha Teel Ware swallowed a penny while playing and was rushed to a Charlottesville VA specialist after her parents decided to seek immediate care. Doctors noted the coin could pass naturally but prepared for possible operation if it stuck, as the family traveled to Virginia.
ATLANTIC CITY N J A new pain killer described as the most effective antiseptic yet devised for tooth drilling was announced before the American Dental association convention. The chemical, Tabesthesia, developed at Columbia University, was said to be 100 percent effective in 80 percent of trials and totally ineffective in four percent.
In Honolulu, navy aviators from the aircraft carrier Lexington resumed the hunt for Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan after their July 2 disappearance. Despite dwindling hopes, the air fleet and surface ships pressed a wide 265000 mile search area as they scoured ocean and sky.
Public Health Training center assigns students to on site health work this week. Three nurses from Peabody College left for Nashville to complete courses begun there. They gained practical training in baby and child health and venereal disease clinics in Raleigh Wyoming and Fayette counties. Several staff changes follow with new appointments for maternal and child hygiene, venereal diseases, and county sanitation leadership across West Virginia counties.
Charleston reports a hot day with 8735 electric fans in use and many air conditioners. Morning sun pushed temperatures near 90 degrees, with indications of a rise beyond yesterday’s 94.
J W Buckland, 65, of Layland died at 7 05 pm last night at the home of K E Warden in Stanaford after a four year illness. He was born August 17 1872 in Summers county to Joseph and Jane Cox Buckland. Survived by widow Alice Mountcastle Buckland three sons Harry Layland Waymond Stanaford Burgess Price Hill six daughters L J Epperly Helen C M Kirtley Layland William D Buckland Hinton A E Bragg Layland Florence Buckland Stanaford Beulah Buckland East Beckley ten grandchildren three brothers Luther Cedar Pearl Covington Va and J C Buckland Hinton one sister Lyda Grimmett Elk Knob.
J C Swinler of Clarksburg is named general manager of the Home Insurance Agency replacing A L Brogan. Brogan has no definite plans. Swinler arrived from Clarksburg last weekend and began work Monday. His wife and son James C Jr expect to join him in a month.
Forces of China and Japan massed in North China as Beijing pledged reinforcements to support the 29th route army against Japanese advances. Peiping and Tientsin reports mixed on local settlements while Washington anxiously watched, with Roosevelts plans altered. Madrid reports renewed bombardment as Franco loyalists press siege.
Generally fair and continuing warm tonight and Friday with local thundershowers Friday afternoon. Beckley reported yesterday high of 87 degrees and a low of 63 as Weather Observer L A Mauck noted.
