President Kennedy faced a crowded scene as more than 2,000 foreign students pressed into his backyard. The mob toppled ropes, a girl fainted, and several were mildly hurt as Kennedy moved toward the crowd after a speech about American ideals and history.

$1.1 Million Worth Of Paintings Stolen

London police report 35 paintings valued around 1.1 million dollars stolen from the O’Hana Gallery overnight. Works by Picasso Renoir Toulouse Lautrec and Cezanne cited. An insurance reward of 56,000 offered. Thieves entered via a rear window after climbing a fire escape and appear skilled at removing works with frames intact.

West Virginia sunshine and warm highs across the state

Bright sunny weather continues in West Virginia with highs mostly in the 80s this afternoon. Tonight and Thursday bring some clouds and a chance of scattered thunderstorms Thursday afternoon. Low temperatures fall to the mid 50s to low 60s with warmer humid conditions on Thursday. Reports from Beckley Oak Hill and Greenbrier River gauge show normal conditions with a new gauge at Hinton recording about 25 feet.

Telstar Creates Global TV Dream With Space Relay

Telstar, a 170 pound, 34 inch sphere built of magnesium and aluminum, successfully relayed telephone conversations and a TV program from space. It orbited Earth with a 158 minute period, 45 degree inclination, and a 600 channel communications capability, while tests involved stations in Andover Maine and across Britain France West Germany Italy and Brazil.

Blow To Kennedy Interest Tax Plan Killed

The Senate Finance Committee voted 10 to 5 to kill the administration’s plan for compulsory withholding of income tax on dividends and interest. The measure would have withheld 20 percent at payment, a key but controversial part of the tax reform package. Five Democrats supported it. it failed with both parties opposing. The panel did adopt a provision requiring disclosure of all dividends and interest paid over 10 dollars, with penalties to come.

U S Frogman Sets Underwater Channel Swim

American diver Fred Baldasare completed the first underwater swim of the English Channel. He spent about 20 hours submerged two feet beneath the surface, amid a two knot flood tide. Departing Cap Gris Nez, France at 1 p.m. Tuesday, he reached Pegwell Bay near Ramsgate at 8:15 a.m. Baldasare described the voyage as rough, especially toward the end.

Mount Hope Girl and Soldier Drown at Lake Belton Texas

Nancy Kay Duncan 16 and Sgt. John P. McGee 23 were found dead Tuesday in Lake Belton near Killeen Texas after being reported missing earlier. Employment Up In Beckley And 5 Other Areas

West Virginia's employment picture brightened as six labor markets reported gains from February to April and March to May. Beckley area employment rose 2.7 percent to 16 170 with unemployment down 12.2 percent. Martinsburg up 8.6 percent to 17 340 with unemployment dropping 17.6 percent. Logan Madison rose nearly 1 percent to 18 000 with unemployment down 7.5 percent. Other metros Wheeling Bridgeport Charleston Huntington Ashland Ironton also posted payroll increases and unemployment falls.

Missing Oceana Boys Found Near Knoxville

Two Oceana teenagers, David Griffith 14 and Wayne Shadrick 15, were located in Knoxville and are being held by authorities pending their parents’ arrival. A three day search by State Police and volunteers followed their disappearance after an overnight campout. Fire Chief Oscar Morgan and others drove to bring them home.
