Washington dispatch notes optimism that space communications will pay off in two to four years with satellite TV and telephony. Telstar’s 37 minute transatlantic relay proves feasibility, marking space communication as an established fact and edging toward global revenue via satellite links.
Charleston UPI says State Commerce Commissioner Hulett C. Smith previews a tourism surge in the first half of the year with attendance at vacation facilities hitting all-time highs. He credits a vigorous promotion and notes a 10 percent rise in cabin revenues, 20 percent higher demand, 5,620 non-resident fishing licenses, and nearly 64,000 more vehicles visiting the state.
President Kennedy faced a crowded scene as more than 2,000 foreign students pressed into his backyard. The mob toppled ropes, a girl fainted, and several were mildly hurt as Kennedy moved toward the crowd after a speech about American ideals and history.
London police report 35 paintings valued around 1.1 million dollars stolen from the O’Hana Gallery overnight. Works by Picasso Renoir Toulouse Lautrec and Cezanne cited. An insurance reward of 56,000 offered. Thieves entered via a rear window after climbing a fire escape and appear skilled at removing works with frames intact.
Bright sunny weather continues in West Virginia with highs mostly in the 80s this afternoon. Tonight and Thursday bring some clouds and a chance of scattered thunderstorms Thursday afternoon. Low temperatures fall to the mid 50s to low 60s with warmer humid conditions on Thursday. Reports from Beckley Oak Hill and Greenbrier River gauge show normal conditions with a new gauge at Hinton recording about 25 feet.
Telstar, a 170 pound, 34 inch sphere built of magnesium and aluminum, successfully relayed telephone conversations and a TV program from space. It orbited Earth with a 158 minute period, 45 degree inclination, and a 600 channel communications capability, while tests involved stations in Andover Maine and across Britain France West Germany Italy and Brazil.
Washington UPI reports the government grants a $1.2 billion depreciation tax break, revising schedules for equipment to boost business. The changes, the first major overhaul since 1942, aim to shorten writeoff periods and raise cash reserves, with President Kennedy highlighting over $1 billion in added reserves.
About 35 African Americans were arrested during a demonstration march toward Albany City Hall in protest of the imprisonment of southern integration leader Martin Luther King Jr. The event drew police action and drew national attention to civil rights protests in Georgia.
New Delhi reports a remote Indian outpost in northern Ladakh is surrounded by Chinese troops. About 400 intruders were described as preparing for a hostile attack. India ordered its troops to resist but not to strike first. Officials say there has been no armed clash yet and supply lines are strained. New Delhi lodged a protest noting China would bear responsibility for any incident.

Dow Jones at 583.87 down 2.14 with 30Industrials, Rails up 0.5 to 123.99 and Uails at 113.96 up 0.36. The overall index at 203.96 and total shares traded reached 810000 by noon.
Senator Estes Kefauver said the United States could have a high altitude fixed orbit communications satellite system within 12 months if all goes well. He praised NASA and AT&T for Telstar’s success while criticizing partial public ownership and noting taxpayers would fund Telstar regardless of outcome.
The Senate Finance Committee voted 10 to 5 to kill the administration’s plan for compulsory withholding of income tax on dividends and interest. The measure would have withheld 20 percent at payment, a key but controversial part of the tax reform package. Five Democrats supported it. it failed with both parties opposing. The panel did adopt a provision requiring disclosure of all dividends and interest paid over 10 dollars, with penalties to come.
American diver Fred Baldasare completed the first underwater swim of the English Channel. He spent about 20 hours submerged two feet beneath the surface, amid a two knot flood tide. Departing Cap Gris Nez, France at 1 p.m. Tuesday, he reached Pegwell Bay near Ramsgate at 8:15 a.m. Baldasare described the voyage as rough, especially toward the end.
United Press International chairman Frank Bartholomew praised Telstar after a New York to Andover Maine call delayed by the satellite. He called Telstar a great human and scientific achievement and said it will expand news coverage and global understanding across nations.
Nancy Kay Duncan 16 and Sgt. John P. McGee 23 were found dead Tuesday in Lake Belton near Killeen Texas after being reported missing earlier. Relatives say accidental drowning. last seen swimming together Monday. Nancy, daughter of Mr and Mrs Clarence Duncan, formerly attended Mount Hope High School. McGee from Franklin Tennessee served at Fort Hood nearby.
Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates will delay the opening of the Eccles mine to August 1, not closing as rumored. A company spokesman cited a lag in the market as the reason. End of June payroll totaled 161 workers.
West Virginia's employment picture brightened as six labor markets reported gains from February to April and March to May. Beckley area employment rose 2.7 percent to 16 170 with unemployment down 12.2 percent. Martinsburg up 8.6 percent to 17 340 with unemployment dropping 17.6 percent. Logan Madison rose nearly 1 percent to 18 000 with unemployment down 7.5 percent. Other metros Wheeling Bridgeport Charleston Huntington Ashland Ironton also posted payroll increases and unemployment falls.
Two Oceana teenagers, David Griffith 14 and Wayne Shadrick 15, were located in Knoxville and are being held by authorities pending their parents’ arrival. A three day search by State Police and volunteers followed their disappearance after an overnight campout. Fire Chief Oscar Morgan and others drove to bring them home.
