Trade Bill Clash as Senate Finance Opens Debate
Washington AP The Senate Finance Committee begins closed door talks on Eisenhower reciprocal trade bill amid a divided chamber. Key decisions include whether to extend the Trade Agreements Act for five years and whether to curb presidential power to block Tariff Commission relief in escape clause cases. The House approved a five year extension plus 25 percent tariff cuts. Byrd notes behind the scenes support for the measure. The change would give Congress stronger say on relief for domestic industries harmed by imports.
