House approves wage bill with split party support
The House passed the bill on final passage with 225 Democrats and 116 Republicans for it and 40 Democrats and 32 Republicans against it. The Kitchin Ayres measure would raise the minimum wage to 1.15 dollars from January 1 and cover about 1.4 million workers in multi state retail chains, without lower rates for the newly covered. Roosevelt criticized during debate that loopholes would shrink the coverage. His alternative would raise to 1.25 dollars in three steps and bring in about 3.5 million workers in retail and service firms with at least one million dollars in annual business.
