Three Marriage Permits Sought in County Clerk Office

Chamber Drive Called Success

Beckley Junior Chamber of Commerce chairman Jack Nuckols said residents in Killarney Lillybrook McCreery and nearby communities requested trucks to collect waste paper. Tomorrow’s city drive would be the Jaycees last due to tie shortages limiting truck access. Boy Scouts Troop 65 and the Junior High School Boy Guards will assist in collecting from homes and offices to reach about 76 dollars, aiming for a 200 dollar Red Cross war relief total.

Germans Claim 43 U.S. Ships Sunk by Submarines

Berlin broadcasts report German U boats off the U S and Canada have sunk 43 ships totaling 302000 tons since war began with the United States. Guilty Woman Probated Due to Children

Civilian Registration Effort Expands in Beckley Area

Civilian registration for emergency local defense duties continues in 55 communities with volunteers signing up today and tomorrow. Montreal asks for 150 more cards after 250 received, Marfork seeks forms in Beckley, and 46 registered by 11 30 am at the Memorial Building. A Danzig and a Queens town volunteer joined efforts, while a Whitby registrar queried the duration of service. The card lists about 30 emergency tasks, each registrant to check at least three.
