Mrs. Mollie Bair Maples died today at 2 30 a m at the Christian Nursing Home in Fayetteville after a lengthy illness. Born September 5 1866 in Washington College Tennessee she lived most of her life in Raleigh County. A Presbyterian, widow of F H Maples, she was sister to Robert T George W Bair and Addie Bair Maples all of Beckley, all predeceased. Survived by several nephews and nieces. Body at Caffee Funeral Home awaiting funeral arrangements.

Seventeen miners trapped as Susquehanna floods Port Griffith mine
In Port Griffith Pennsylvania the Susquehanna River breached the Knox Coal tunnel flooding sections of the mine. Twelve miners were trapped or drowned while thirty three escaped. Seven emerged via an air shaft and twenty six wandered through water for seven hours before rescue. Crews planned to clear the mine before pumping operations could start.
