Mrs. Mable Redden Dies After Childbirth Complications

Mrs. Mable Vernelle Redden, 28, of Beaver, died in a local hospital at 4 15 this morning after a lengthy illness following the birth of a child on December 12. She was born at Jumping Branch and leaves parents Mr. and Mrs. D L Bowling of St Albans, husband Curtis Redden, and son Larry Dean Redden. Also surviving are brothers Oren and Theron Bowling of St Albans, Carl Bowling and Raymond Bowling of St Albans, Cris Bowling in Hillsboro West Virginia, sister Mrs. D M Farley of Beaver and Gladys Bowling of St Albans. Funeral arrangements are by Caffee Undertakers. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev W S Overstreet at Beaver church Saturday at 2 PM, burial in Jumping Branch cemetery. Body to be moved to Beaver home today.

Showboat Water Queen Sinks In Kanawha River

The showboat Water Queen sank in about four feet of water in the Kanawha River at Point Pleasant after a strong wind blew her to the north shore. Mrs Roy L Hyatt wife of the owner and five crew escaped in boats. The lower deck was underwater and the cause remained unknown.

Raleigh County Urges Feeding Quail During Deep Snow

Game protector O B Harris urged Raleigh County residents to feed quail and other birds during a cold snap. He explained free feed is available from Camp Raleigh at Shady Spring, or by calling Beckley numbers. Cracked corn and cane tops suffice, placed on the ground under hemlocks or near brush to shelter birds from snow, as reports warn heavy bird losses elsewhere.

Slab Fork Louis Carr Lindsey 36 a electrician at Slab Fork died in a local hospital from an ulcer of the stomach. The body was taken to Rose Funeral Home for burial preparations. Bonus Measure With President

Washington, Jan 23. The bonus drama moved into a psychological phase as interest centered on the president's decision regarding the $2,491,000,000 bill to pay 3,500,000 bonus certificates with $50 bonds redeemable after June 15. The measure, passed by the House 346 to 59 after Senate approval 74 to 16, is expected to pass over a veto despite veto talk. The president indicated no immediate action, with advisers predicting several days before any decision.

Paroled thief held in slaying of Fresno girl

Elton Stone, 30, paroled from San Quentin in 1934, confessed to killing Mary Lewis Stammer, 15, daughter of attorney Walter H. Stammer, in Fresno. Kenneth Harris Improves After Nine Weeks Illness

Williams Is Injured In Stotesbury Mine

C D Williams a 24 year old rock driller at Stotesbury was injured at 3 o clock this morning when caught between a mine timber and car. He was admitted to Beckley hospital with a fractured pelvis and expected to recover after a long rest in bed.

Record Cold Sweeps Beckley With 19 Below Zero

In a drastic plunge from 36 to 19 below, Beckley endured a historic cold snap. L. A. Mauck reported midnight at ten below while Flat Top observer Miss Bess Lilly logged 17 below at 7:30 am and 16 below at 9 am as a NW snowstorm and 25 mph wind swept through. Road crews labored as temperatures collapsed and authorities warned of continuing frigid conditions.

Levi Bailey Service Held This Afternoon

Funeral services for Levi Bailey 59 of Clear Creek were held this afternoon at Workman s Creek church. Reverend J W Bacon conducted the service with burial in the church cemetery under Tyree and Dew undertakers. Bailey, lifelong resident of Clear Creek, spent many years in the timber business.

The body of King George V was brought to London for four days of lying in state. The funeral train arrived at 2 45 p m with tens of thousands in the streets. Edward VIII pledged to follow his father’s path as Prime Minister Baldwin spoke of a coronation next year. The imperial crown with its 3000 diamonds rested atop the coffin in Westminster Hall.

Chandler Signs New Court Act

In Frankfort Kentucky Governor Albert B Chandler signed into law an act authorizing the Kentucky court of appeals to prepare advisory opinions on pending state legislation at the governor's request.
