Legislature Marks Time In Washington Inauguration Week
West Virginia lawmakers paused in Charleston as Gov. Barron and others attended the presidential inauguration in Washington. The Legislature planned to reconvene at 2 p.m. Monday with bills including Barron’s proposed personal income tax and sales tax increases to raise about 17.5 million in new revenues for a 5,000-worker public works program. The House cleared a 77-11 vote on the consumer sales tax hike and sent it to the governor. A constitutional revision resolution could allow Barron to serve a nonconsecutive term and shift budget control away from elective officials to the governor and other executive offices. Other actions included a Stonewall Jackson birthday resolution, a road-commission study on a Potomac River bridge, and scheduling for executive appointments and a centennial train water distribution.
