The Register announces its fifth annual spelling bee with planning discussions among Register staff and school officials from three counties. May 7 and 8 are set for the Tri County matches in Beckley with separate division nights, 7 p.m. start times. Co chairmen and district dates will be set by principals associations and county leaders.
Washington AP reports the Senate passed a two thirds rule to cut off debate, a Johnson backed reform that some Northern and Western senators hailed while others protested it went too far. Critics like Javits called it no gain, while Douglas framed it as a conscience soothing move. Russell condemned the change as demeaning to debate freedom.
Wiley C Bower dies at 91 in Beckley at the home of his son-in-law and daughter Mr and Mrs George W Ballard where he had lived 12 years Bedfast for over a year his death due to coronary thrombosis He was born March 25 1867 on Bowers Ridge and was the last surviving member of his immediate family Surviving are two sons Charles Mullens and Woodrow Alderson three daughters Mrs Millard C Houck Mrs Albert M Bare and Mrs W C Neal 29 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren The body is at Robertson and Fogiesong Funeral Home Mullens arrangements incomplete
Al Colvin, 35, a tile contractor, confessed to killing 10-year-old Sammy Joe Moss and wounding his mother Alma Moss in Monticello Indiana. Colvin, who lived at the Moss home, then shot himself but survived with flesh wounds. Alma Moss, a den mother, was hospitalized in critical condition with a wound to the left temple. Officers were summoned after a family fight was reported by Alma Moss.
Ronnie Godby a 17 year old son of Mr and Mrs Carl C Godby 209 Mercer St remains confined to home after a sled accident Saturday He is improving but will be at home another week or 10 days He suffered a hurt back a broken tooth and a concussion when he ran into a tree
Charleston AP reports railroad spokesmen attack truckers stance on revising West Virginia transportation privilege tax to apply uniform rates. West Virginia Railroad Assn backs bill. truckers warn rates would shift tax burden, reducing rail tax by about a third and raising truckers’ tax by about 100 percent.
CHARLESTON AP The Road Commission asks for eight million dollars yearly in state funds to match all available federal funds for the Interstate highway system. After backlog completion, annual state needs would be about 3.8 million, with 4.2 million redirected to the regular road program.
Soviet Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan arrives in New York for a two day visit with about 500 police on duty for his dinners and receptions. Protest pickets are planned by Hungarian former political prisoners and captive European Nations groups. He will lunch with Wall Street bankers, then return to New York via Los Angeles after a TV appearance.
Wesley F Meadows of Princewick is jailed on three vehicle charges including operating without a license and invalid registration. Rex Lovell of Beckley faces grand larceny charges after allegedly entering a Clyde Street home and stealing a watch and ring, with the ring recovered. David Wix of Fort Polk, Walter Chapman of Daniels, and James Robert Flynn of Beckley are jailed for drunkenness, breach of peace, non support, or trespass and awaiting arraignment in local jails.
Ailing revivalist Billy Graham heads to Mayo Clinic specialists in Minneapolis for treatment. Vice President Nixon urged him to rest his feet as he postpones the Australia crusade and may delay other world tour dates pending his health.

News from Havana reports growing executions after Fidel Castro's forces tightened control. At least 145 people executed since January 1, with trials speeding up for up to 100 prisoners in Oriente province. A mass firing near Santiago added to the tally. many defendants held in secret as about 3,000 Cubans are detained nationwide. Raul Castro confirms strong military control in Oriente.
Gov Orval E Faubus will take a third term oath as Arkansas chief executive and outline his legislative agenda to the 62nd General Assembly. He has long opposed school integration and may push new segregation laws, a department of agriculture, and a building program. Jeff Davis was the only previous Arkansas governor to serve three terms in 1905.
Beckley police investigate two purse snatching incidents on Monday night. One victim, Mrs. Lettie Simmons of Beckley, was knocked down on Main Street by three men and bruised knees after they attempted to seize her purse. Another woman had her purse taken. investigating officer unavailable.
Out of 79 cases presented, 71 indictments returned by a seven woman nine man grand jury. Eight no bills, 11 cases not presented. Names of two indicted Monday withheld. list includes maiming, breaking and entering, grand larceny, embezzlement, drunk driving, firearm offenses, and other charges.
President Eisenhower outlined a 77.0 billion dollar budget projecting about a 100 million dollar surplus for the next fiscal year. Senate and House leaders expressed cautious optimism for possible tax relief in coming years as Congress reviews spending and legislative programs. The budget, to be sent to Congress, envisions a balanced year with a current deficit of around 12 billion dollars for the present year.
Secretary of State Dulles called Soviet ideas for Germany dangerous and stupid and warned they risk peace in Europe. He said the US and Allies will keep Germany linked to the Western world and hinted unification could occur without free elections, without elaborating. He planned firm talks with Mikoyan while noting no negotiations with him.

A Beckley man Maurice Cox was killed in a conveyor belt accident at a cement plant in Mc Cook MM. Survivors include two sons Charlie and Bill, wife Margaret, and a step-daughter Regina Martin, aid of Klaus MM. The body will be brought to Beckley. funeral arrangements are incomplete.
The Beckley Community Concert Association boards to meet at Beckley Hotel Wednesday 7:39 p.m. They will review the 1959 60 program with Richard Jarvis the New York representative, formerly of Pineville, in attendance.
Richard Gravely a 35 year old Beckley man posted a 355 bond for his Beckley Police Court appearance after being arrested at 1 55 am today by city police on a hazardous driving charge Otha Robertson 56 also of Beckley was arrested at 9 07 am today for running a red light and posted a 5 bond for his appearance in Police Court
At the State Capitol Charleston the 45th Legislature prepares for a 60 day session with about 25 lawmakers present. Posts include sergeant at arms and assistant doorkeepers paid daily rates of 12 to 14 dollars. Stenographers join the pool at 15 dollars daily. Roy Lee Harmon of Raleigh County is in Charleston with Jean Dowdy as his stenographer attache. Other staff include Anne Lilly and Harold Trotter with varied duties and pay.
Albany New York plans a two cent per gallon gasoline tax increase within weeks as part of Governor Rockefeller's push for higher taxes to balance a nearly two billion dollar state budget. The plan may also raise income tax and cigarette taxes to cover a 250 million dollar deficit.

Fayette County Sheriff Deputies and Fayetteville City Police hunt an unidentified man who robbed a Gatewood resident at about 1 a m. The intruder gagged H C Martin and tied him to a bed, stealing his car 41 dollars a gun and a pocket watch. Deputies investigating are Buddy Crouch Pete Withrow and Fred O Boyle.
Gilbert Goode president of the Wining County Board of Education remained on oxygen with an unchanged condition Monday night at Stevens Clinic Welch where he is treated for a heart ailment. He suffered a Saturday attack at his Pineville insurance office and walked to his doctor for immediate hospital admission.
Island Creek Coal Co announces Hubert H. Barber as manager of the new Guyan Division. The division includes five Logan County mines acquired from Guyan Eagle and Elk Creek. Barber moves from production assistant to manager with headquarters at Amherstdale, Logan County.
