Alphabetic showdown at House speaker election
Washington report humorously notes Representative Halleck would favor a shorter alphabet to improve his chances in a speaker contest against John McCormack. McCormack won 248 to 166 with both candidates voting present. The piece mocks the outcome and jokes about alphabetical timing and Greek relocation. It ends with a generic commodity notice about heads of households collecting items with Social Security numbers.
