Austin criticizes Stanford on strip mine abolition study

Austin disputes Stanford's claim that abolishing strip mining would cost 7,700 deep miners their jobs, arguing no evidence supports it. He says deep mines subsidized by strip mines blend coal to avoid cleaning costs and that productive deep mines would expand if strip mining ends. He cites WVU data showing far fewer affected miners and a net gain in jobs, while accusing Stanford of legalistic neglect of DNR authority and “cozy” operator relations.
