Four children perish in Valley Bend fire
A rural three room frame home in Valley Bend burned in the early morning killing four children Katheryn age 4 Darlene age 3 Richard age 2 and Linda age 10 months. The parents Ray Collins 30 and Mrs Louella Collins 24 were injured with their six year old son Kenneth Ray Collins. Mrs Collins seven months pregnant required transfusions and was in critical condition with burns over about seventy percent of her body. The husband said a falling flue awakened him.

Pineville Civic Leader Fred Shannon Dies at 74
Fred Harrison Shannon long served 32 years as chief of office deputy in the Wyoming County Sheriff's Department and died at 6 a.m. in Welch hospital at 74 from complications of a blood ailment. A Pineville resident, he was a prominent civic and religious leader, father of Fred H. Shannon Jr. and former bank cashier. Born June 11, 1888, he also taught school and retired in 1960 from the sheriff's staff. He belonged to the First Methodist Church.
