West Liberty official dismissed for rule violations

Senate Education Committee heard West Liberty State College president emeritus Dr. Paul Elbin was dismissed as dean after repeatedly using college stationery for personal views. Officials said the action stemmed from unauthorized use of stationery and not his public statements about the plan to split Potomac State from West Virginia University. A dozen students attended as the panel discussed the regents plan to create regional community colleges.

West Virginia House approves dog racing measure

The West Virginia House passed a bill legalizing greyhound racing with a 56 to 39 vote. The measure would raise state revenue and allow local petitions for referendums on dog tracks, while opposing lawmakers criticized it as revenue driven. The session also moved an insurance bill for state employees and discussed scholarships and police retirement raises. The Senate was to act next on the dog racing bill.

Copters Save 400 Trapped In Sao Paulo Fire

A Brazilian blaze at the Pirani Building in Sao Paulo prompted sixteen helicopters to land on the roof and airlift over 400 trapped occupants to safety. Nine deaths were confirmed and more than 400 injured as occupants jumped to escape the flames. The fire raged for hours with officials predicting no survivors inside once cooled.

High Water Floods Williamson Area and Surrounding Counties

Flooding forced evacuations as rain intensified in the Tug River region. Williamson Daily News editor James Van Zant warned conditions could have worsened with more rain. Logan and Pike counties closed schools. 44 National Guardsmen patrolled Logan County. Major roads into Williamson and other routes were blocked by high water or slides, with Matewan among hardest hit. The Weather Bureau warned of possible additional rain but limited flood risk unless heavy.

Barge Blast Investigation Aims New Bridge Over Ohio River

Witness says the young man drowned not from the blast and Stephenson's body was found when a large barge section was raised. The father, Jack, remains missing. Burns plans a Washington report faulting the impact over a pump spark and will urge constructing a new bridge rather than repairing the 01 year old span closed since the explosion. A final hearing is to occur in about two weeks.

Flying Eagle Band Invited to World Festival at Heysel Stadium

The Flying Eagle Band is set to perform at a late June 1973 festival at Heysel Stadium Belgium with a Parade of Champions. Bands compete for the King's Trophy, unclassified by past champions, in a five day event featuring world dignitaries and delegates from SHAPE and NATO nations.

Four Motorists Cited By Beckley Police

Beckley city police cited four motorists Thursday for traffic violations. Roger Stover 17 of Harper was cited for defective equipment and must appear in Municipal Court. William R. Boyko 19 of Prosperity was cited for running a red light with a municipal court date listed. Marvin Arzelle Smoot 18 and Thomas E. Plumley 2 were cited for speeding and related infractions with court dates set in February and March respectively.
