Goodman gang and poker players indicted in Wyoming County

A Wyoming County Grand Jury returned 26 indictments naming 31 defendants including 13 Goodman gang members and 9 accused poker players. The cases cover arson moonshine offenses and firearms as well as multiple armed robberies and gambling charges in Pineville and nearby areas. Sixteen pled guilty or confessed by day’s end with several awaiting sentencing March 27.

Harold P Boggs 29 husband of a former Pineville resident died after a heart attack at home Saturday. Funeral held Tuesday at Mt Tabor Church Pinch with Miss Elizabeth Wilson of Pineville attending. Survived by wife three children mother and brother all of Pinch.

Oak Hill Moose Lodge Launches Triple Anniversary Drive

Oak Hill Moose Lodge 1664 runs a triple anniversary membership drive from Feb 15 to Apr 15 led by director Robert Powell of Romney. Joseph Thompson Taken by Death

Joseph Edward Thompson 72 a retired Virginian Railway brakeman died in his sleep at the Itmann home of a son where he had lived recently. Born July 30, 1886, at Roseville near Pax he was son of the late Christopher and Amanda Smith Thompson. Graveside rites will be held at Rest Haven Memorial Park Princeton.

Whitesville Hospital Construction Slated To Begin This Year

Whitesville sees Raleigh-Boone Hospital construction start this year after a United Mine Workers Welfare Fund report. Dr. W. V. Wilkerson noted land deeded for the hospital, with plans to finish preliminary work by spring and begin building soon. Officers elected at the Whitesville Hotel meeting include Eddie Harvit as president and Perry Aliff as treasurer.

Harris Infant Dies Kentucky Rites Set

Harris infant, day-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Harris of Colcord, died Tuesday in a Charleston hospital. Surviving parents include two brothers and four sisters, grandmother Mrs. Mamie Miller of Cleaton, Ky. Funeral at grandmother’s home with burial in Miller Cemetery, Cleaton.

Oak Hill The Youth Temperance Council met Tuesday at Oak Hill Baptist Church with Bill Nunley as president and Tommy Harrah secretary. Botanists to Gather for Lookout Nuttall Grounds Tour

The Southern Appalachian Botanical Club plans a two day pilgrimage to the Lawrence William Nuttall grounds near Lookout on April 24 and 25. activities include an illustrated lecture at Nuttall High School on April 24 and a visit to Nuttallburg in the New River Gorge on April 25 with stops at regional botanical collection grounds.
