Police say three men and two women were linked to a weekend jewelry store robbery at Leonard Taylor store. Armed robbery charges allege the trio tied up staff and fled with jewels valued up to $500,000 in a suitcase. Suspects include Paul Panczko Richard Kay and Edward Cook. Accessories after the fact charged Manny Blanton and Betty Moody. Blanton reportedly carried $100,000 in cash.
Cape Canaveral reports the countdown for John Glenn's orbital flight has reached minus 48 hours as weather outlooks from Florida to the mid Atlantic remain unsettled. Forecasters warn of heavy rains and gusty winds typical of late February and March, jeopardizing the 7:30 to 12:30 p.m. EST launch window. Scientists say they have done all they can on this eighth Mercury mission to place Glenn in three orbits around Earth aboard a $400 million program.
DETROIT UP I reports George Romney resigned as president and board chairman of American Motors Corp after months of talk he would seek Michigan governor. He remains a director on leave without pay while Roy Abernethy becomes president and COO and Richard F. E. Cross named board chairman and CEO.
New York based lawyer James B. Donovan who brokered the Powers Abel swap says he also negotiated for American student Marvin W. Makinen held on spy charges in the Ukraine. Makinen, a Fulbright scholar and former Free University attendee, is serving an eight year sentence. Donovan, who was Abel’s counsel in 1957, returned from Europe after the Powers exchange.
Atty. Gen. Robert F. Kennedy landed in Jakarta at 5:44 pm after the government covered anti Kennedy signs with whitewash. Signs along his route urged him to leave Indonesia and oppose U S actions in West Irian and New Guinea. The U S Embassy area remained under heavy guard following prior stone throwing by leftist youths.
MIAMI UPI Police nabbed an escaped murderer, Wilbur E Sullivan, in an apartment after a massive manhunt. He had released a mother and her son he held for over 24 hours, and was armed with a sawed off shotgun. Sullivan, convicted of killing cab driver C T Theodorou in Coconut Grove in 1947, escaped from a Fort Lauderdale road camp January 28. He had checked into Robert Kelly’s home as a roomer six days earlier and told the family who he was.
In Winston Salem North Carolina a shoplifting ring of 13 girls aged 12 to 15 was broken over the weekend. they admitted taking clothing and small items and swapping clothes among themselves. detective lieutenant J H Lentz said none were from destitute families and the break came when two girls were detained by store employees. the case began in December with one girl stealing and others joining in.

Raleigh County dog warden A C Allen announced a crackdown on dogs on school property to protect children. He said the Raleigh County Court ordered immediate pickup of any dogs found on school grounds regardless of tags. Teel school patrons voiced fear of bites as police urged strict enforcement.
Newton Arlin Pennington of Beaver submits the final Raleigh County Board of Education candidacy bringing the slate to six members. Clerk Hanks reports no new applications after the Saturday deadline. Pennington, 45, a part time farmer and former maintenance worker for the board, was born April 17, 1921 in Lerena.
Parsons WVa UPI Doctor Guy H Michael Jr defends his MAA prescriptions saying state approved and urged longer courses. He claims to see more welfare patients than any other doctor in the state and calls himself unjustly listed among MAA sinners as officials dispute multiple abuse allegations involving six doctors and a hospital.
Des Moines Iowa reports a light plane crash Sunday killed two airwomen and left two more in critical condition. Victims include Cleo Braught 40 and Cecil Utsler 39. Alice Pfantz 45 and Marilyn Williams 38 died.

PITTSBURGH United Steelworkers and steel industry negotiators open one of the earliest bargaining sessions in history aiming to settle quickly and avoid a crippling strike. The talks give about 20 weeks to reach a new agreement before the current contract expires June 30 after a 116 day strike in 1959.
French government sources said secret talks between France and Algerian rebel leaders have resumed, with reports that a cease-fire agreement could be near. Negotiations were described as taking place in Switzerland or along the French Swiss border.
