State road commissioner Patrick C. Graney announced a survey of a proposed Bolt to Three Forks road. The plan aims to connect Logan and Raleigh counties, giving Beckley farmers quicker market access and boosting Beckley business and regional traffic.

Deadly St. Louis Tornado Kills 17. Hundreds Hurt

A tornado struck St. Louis and suburbs at 2 12 a m causing 17 deaths and 265 injuries, with many trapped in collapsed homes. The disaster damaged facilities including TV and radio towers, prompted full civil defense mobilization, and spurred urban rescue efforts as responders evacuated victims and searched debris.

Sherman C. Trail, Beckley schools superintendent, announced the district would close for the day after an anonymous bomb threat targeting Woodrow Wilson High and Beckley Junior High. Police searched both buildings with no bombs found. classes resume tomorrow.

Helen Miner Injury at Helen Mine Reported

William Grant Davis, 59, was struck in the face by a rock while working in the Helen mine of Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates. He is listed in satisfactory condition at Beckley Memorial Hospital after admission at 1:35 p.m. Monday for treatment.

West Virginia Weather and River Conditions Report

West Virginia forecast shows windy showers and a plunge in temperature tonight with lows near 35 to 43. Wednesday brings mostly cloudy, windy, much colder conditions with light snow flurries. Beckley highs near 42, Oak Hill high around 58 yesterday and 47 this morning. River status at Bellepoint indicates normal Greenbrier stage and Bluestone Reservoir water at a muddy stage with 24 gates open and gauge at 2.2 feet.

Two Youths Arrested In Mt Hope Scare

Mount Hope police, state officers, and Fayette County officials arrested two Kilsyth youths, both 16, after they admitted involvement in a bomb scare at Mount Hope High and nearby school. They were released on 500 bond each and to return to court March 3. The tip led to searches of Mount Hope High and Mount Hope Junior High with no bomb found. classes were only briefly interrupted.

Court Change Bill Faces Rough Going in Legislature

A Raleigh County local bill proposing a court jurisdiction shift faced a tough reception in the House Judiciary Committee after the Raleigh County Bar Association opposed it. Beckleyan Davie Gilpin of the West Virginia Conservation Commission will join three other West Virginians in Memphis Tennessee on February 13 and 14 for the Wild Turkey Management Symposium. Participants include C O Handley of Charleston R Wayne Bailey of Marlinton and Tom Sanford of Romney. Gilpin leads the forest game restoration project. The meeting aims to consolidate turkey biology data and set research goals.

Michigan Motorist Released On Bond

George Sawyer of Corletos was released from Raleigh County Jail after posting a $50 bond to Magistrate Cotton White. He is to appear Friday for a hearing on a drunk driving charge. Sawyer was arrested by Turnpike Police and jailed at 5:35 p m Monday.

Valley Drive Work to Resume This Summer in Beckley

Beckley road plans advance this summer with grading drainage paving and a bridge at Beckley Avenue near Armour Packing Co. A Mabscott bridge over the Poor Charlie’s junk yard and a Cora Street bridge are also planned with right of way issues delaying work until August. The long delayed Valley Drive aims to ease traffic from Crab Orchard to Mabscott and discussions include rerouting the Green Valley stretch to smoother terrain.

County Leaders Plan 4-H Week

Raleigh County 4-H leaders met to set up plans for National 4-H Week from February 28 to March 7. Windows in local businesses will feature 4-H displays and a Go To Church Sunday service is planned March 1 at First Baptist Church Beckley. NEPH Week Committee Meeting Sets Officer Nominations

A luncheon meeting of the Executive Committee on the Employment of the Physically Handicapped will be held at noon February 17 at El Chico. Alexandria Va Sets Integration Milestone in Quiet School Entry

Nine Negro children entered three previously all white public schools in Alexandria under court order backed by police but no trouble occurred. The city became the third Virginia community to integrate since the massive resistance era. Seventeen Negroes in Norfolk and four in Arlington County had been admitted earlier. Police deployment numbered about 60 to 65 around Ramsay and Theodore Ficklin Elementary and Hammond High.

Floyd W. Cobb 77 formerly of Beckley died at 9 10 p m Monday in a local hospital after a stroke suffered February 3 while visiting his son in Piney View Retired coal miner Cobb was a member of Acme Methodist Church Surviving are three sons three daughters two brothers three sisters and 17 grandchildren The body will remain at the Caffee Funeral Home pending arrangements.

Coin Boxes Stolen From Telephone Booths In Beclky Area

State Police were alerted by Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company about thefts from pay stations in Beckley area. At least six coin boxes in the 1921 By Pass area and at Stanford were broken into over the weekend. Change totals are not estimated, but telephone damage is extensive.

Last Rites Thursday For Morefield Claytor

Funeral services for Morefield Claytor will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor Chapel with Elder W. M. Neal officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park. Claytor, 66, Stanaford, died Sunday in a local hospital. The body will remain at the funeral home.

Young defendants put on probation in Raleigh County court

In Raleigh County Criminal Court Judge Harry L. McCreery granted probation to seven of twelve youths including Harry Smith Jr. and Charlie Miller who faced breaking and entering charges. Miller was denied probation. others received 1 to 10 year prison terms with probation after demonstrations of good records. Several youths involved in a prior riot were remanded or pending decisions.
