Blue laws debate pits church views against retail interests
In Charleston the House Judiciary Committee heard advocates for and against stronger Sunday blue laws. Retailers led by Heck's discount stores argued tighter rules won t curb competition, while the Retail Merchants Association said Sunday hours threaten fairness as stores push for a seven day week. Church leaders urged action to curb Sunday sales citing family values. The proposal would specify banned items and raise fines, with House members weighing religious liberty and economic impact.
