A Chase Manhattan bank placard titled What’s a Wife Worth? calculates an American housewife’s weekly value at 159.34 dollars based on 99.6 hours of tasks like nursemaid cooking and housekeeping. The notice argues housewives are a major economic force, potentially lifting GNP by about 35 percent.
Tokyo dispatch reports Communist China forming a patriotic front to topple Thailand’s pro Western government and expel U S influence. Beijing labeled Thailand the next Southeast Asia target, urging united action to drive out U S imperialism and secure independence and democracy for the country.
Eugene Francis McDonald III, heir to the Zenith fortune, was found with self inflicting wounds and a gunshot wound in his home near Tucson. Investigators seek answers to why a man with millions would take his life as questions about the method remain unresolved.
Five Kansas City utility workers died after an underground transformer exploded while repairs were underway at a vault near the Commerce Towers in downtown Kansas City. The transformer, a new design filled with synthetic oil, shorted and erupted, killing three on site and later dying others. Names given include Robert A. Gish, Lawrence L. Coulter, George R. Ross, George C. Hadley, and Columbus W. Wood.

Highs later reach near 81 in California and 46 in Old Town Maine with a general WV five day outlook warmer by 5 to 10 degrees above the usual range.
In Buenos Aires a priest, Rev. Carlos Bertone, confessed he faked his death to flee the priesthood. He disappeared after diving into the Plate Estuary and resurfaced in a boarding house wearing lay clothes. Police say the case will likely be turned over to church authorities.
King Savang Vatthana of Laos orders Crown Prince Vong Savang to fly from Luang Prabang to Vientiane to bolster morale as negotiations continue over an intra army feud that led to bloody street fighting. The rebellion was crushed Thursday. A funeral will be held Sunday in Easton Md for Tom M. Girdler, former head of Jones & Laughlin and Republic Steel. He will be buried in Louisville, Ky. Sen Daniel K Inouye has contracted executive flu and is hospitalized at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Adlai E Stevenson, U S ambassador to the United Nations, turns 65 and is greeted at the White House by President Johnson and Mrs Johnson with a white frosting cake and a blue candle reading Happy Birthday. Also notes Marathon bar growth, a dock strike in the East and Gulf Coast, Mariner 4’s 117 million mile flight, and de Gaulle’s remarks on health amid French politics.
Annette Stout, a Kitten Club performer at the Morton House Hotel, is also the mother of nine children aged 2 to 14. Married to a truck driver, she joined the club after posing as a model student and continues to work there after her husband’s hospital release.
Charleston report slams the Seconday Schools Activities Commission and Senator Tempos says the SSAC will vanish after July 1. State Board of Education approves steps, including seven study committees, and Superintendent Rex Smith notes bylaws usurp county boards.
Charles Hodel publisher of The Raleigh Register and The Beckley Post-Herald is listed at Raleigh General Hospital in critical condition after a stroke during the night or early morning. The report notes his status as critical.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr in Selma asked Negroes to contact voting registrars to discuss a judge’s ruling halting demonstrations. Aides Andrew Young and James Bevel said King, jailed on parading without a permit, would decide about bonds and possible return. The ruling bars a literacy test and requires processing at least 100 Negro voter applicants daily.
A six member congressional delegation flies to Alabama to inspect Selma’s racial situation and assess new federal voting legislation needs. Federal Judge Thomas ordered liberalized voter registration in Dallas County and criticized civics tests, while Selma leaders criticized the ruling. King and other leaders halted demonstrations, with King jailed earlier and expected to post bond soon.
President Johnson's 1.2 billion school aid bill cleared its initial House hurdle as the general education subcommittee approved it 6 to 0 with no Republicans present. The measure retains three new programs, including 1 billion for districts serving 5 million low income children, 100 million for libraries and texts, and 100 million for shared time centers. Democrats led the vote 6 to 3 after public hearings and drafting sessions aimed at addressing church state concerns.
UPI reports the National Safety Council figures show 47 800 highway fatalities in 1964, up 10 percent from 1963, with an economic loss near 8.2 billion. Council president Howard Pyle says the rise reflects failing pace with growing automobile population.

An underground nuclear test at JACKASS FLATS Nevada was fired as 5,000 workers staged a safety strike. The low yield blast measured under 20,000 tons of TNT, the second test this year and the first labor dispute at the site this year.

A 32 year old Beckley woman Lillian Charlotte Sheppard was found dead in the yard of Mrs Nancy Stanley Eisenhower Drive about 9:30 a.m. after apparently falling while walking at night. She was born Jenkins Ky Oct 16 1902 daughter of Edwin F Sheppard and Lillian Radford Sheppard. Survived by her mother of Beckley and sister Betty Rice Venice Calif. Body at Keyser Bryant Funeral Home pending arrangements.
