Larger Turkey Crop Expected This Year

The Crop Reporting Service forecasts a larger national turkey crop in 1949. West Virginia growers aim for 750,000 birds, a 10 percent rise from last year, with total U.S. production up about 1 percent to around 41.9 million. Regional plans vary, with South Atlantic up 15 percent and Western states down 8 percent, offsetting other gains. Factors include feed costs, hatching eggs, poults, and market prices, which shifted 1949 dynamics. The 1942-46 average, record highs, and past stocks influence projections, but actual output may differ as intentions diverge from January.
