Oak Hill postpones a decision on accepting two newly paved streets until the January 4 city council meeting. Councilmen absent at a prior special session. residents from Lee and Harvey Streets urged to return for input. Citizens complained the streets were not properly constructed and water on the surfaces requires repairs before completion.

Mount Hope couple James Hunter White and Christine Peebles White celebrate 60 years of marriage dating from December 31 1888 in Lillicoultry Scotland. Boost in Postal Rates Goes Into Effect Saturday

Postmaster John Hollandsworth of Beckley announced the new postal rates effective Saturday. First class letters, air mail under eight ounces remain 3 and 6 cents respectively, with other classes and services adjusted: parcel post, special handling, postal notes, money orders, registered and insured mail all see updated fees, while greeting cards require two cents.

Jury Denies Hospital $95 in Maternity Case

A Beckley Hospital maternity suit for $95 was denied by a magistrate’s jury after two prior trials. The court heard admission that the woman required hospitalization but found the case abnormal and not deserving of hospital admission. The miner’s wife gave birth in June 1947 at a Gulf Coast location.

Fanrock farmer Blane Jackson dies in sleep at 55

Blane Jackson, 55, farmer of Fanrock, was found dead in bed at his home about 1:30 am Thursday. He had recently been released from Newton Baker Hospital in Martinsburg on May 14 after a World War I veteran’s illness. Death attributed to asthma and heart condition. He is survived by his father, four sons, and many brothers and sisters. Funeral services set for 1 pm Saturday at the family cemetery with Rev. A Sparks and Rev. Edgar Beverly officiating.
