Motorists warned to minimize travel as Fayette County roads ice covered. Crews spread cinders to keep passage open but additional snow makes roads more hazardous. Officials urge chains for travel and note Sewell Mountain remains icy.
Oak Hill postpones a decision on accepting two newly paved streets until the January 4 city council meeting. Councilmen absent at a prior special session. residents from Lee and Harvey Streets urged to return for input. Citizens complained the streets were not properly constructed and water on the surfaces requires repairs before completion.
Funeral services for Pvt Joe C Morgan, son of Edward and Susie Morgan of Baileysville, will be conducted Sunday at Shields Memorial Baptist Church on Brier Creek near Baileysville. The rites will be performed by Wirt Hatfield of Clearfork with burial at Heesield. Also noted is coach Murray Mendenhall of the Anderson Packers.
Mount Hope couple James Hunter White and Christine Peebles White celebrate 60 years of marriage dating from December 31 1888 in Lillicoultry Scotland. They recall life in Scotland with large families 13 children eight grandchildren and 26 grandchildren. Now living with daughter in Mount Hope they reflect on wartime rationing churches and a life of travel and family celebration.

Mrs Ethel Alvarez 50 died at her Harmco home after three years of illness. Born 1898 in Dry Fork she was wife of Joe Alvarez Mulilens Smokeless Coal employee. Funeral at Robertson and Foglesong Chapel Saturday 2 p.m. burial in Sui Run Cemetery Itmann. Survived by husband and son Marina Ramos of Lexington and other relatives.
Mount Hope Lions Club plans an all night New Year’s Eve dance at the Clubhouse from 10 p m to 2 a m with Carter and his orchestra supplying music. Davel Neddie C Johns 25 of Birmingham is held in Raleigh County jail on a government check forgery charge and will be transferred to Tampa after U S Commissioner determines trial location. Invitations extended to Beckley Oak Hill Hill Fayetteville Mount Hope area for the event.
Postmaster John Hollandsworth of Beckley announced the new postal rates effective Saturday. First class letters, air mail under eight ounces remain 3 and 6 cents respectively, with other classes and services adjusted: parcel post, special handling, postal notes, money orders, registered and insured mail all see updated fees, while greeting cards require two cents.

A Beckley Hospital maternity suit for $95 was denied by a magistrate’s jury after two prior trials. The court heard admission that the woman required hospitalization but found the case abnormal and not deserving of hospital admission. The miner’s wife gave birth in June 1947 at a Gulf Coast location.
Miss Rosa Pearl Brown daughter of Mr and Mrs Azel Brown of Pineville married Pic Roy F Thomas of Itmann on December 25 at the bride’s sister Mrs James Robert Toley home. The Rev Samuel A Hartford officiated. The couple will reside with the bride’s parents for now. The groom has served two years in Germany and leaves for Washington DC on December 27.
Blane Jackson, 55, farmer of Fanrock, was found dead in bed at his home about 1:30 am Thursday. He had recently been released from Newton Baker Hospital in Martinsburg on May 14 after a World War I veteran’s illness. Death attributed to asthma and heart condition. He is survived by his father, four sons, and many brothers and sisters. Funeral services set for 1 pm Saturday at the family cemetery with Rev. A Sparks and Rev. Edgar Beverly officiating.
