Oak Hill hosts New Year celebrations with dances and noisy watch parties in area lodges and fraternal groups. Five local men enlist in the Army armored forces. others plan gatherings, music by an out-of-town orchestra, paper hats and toys for guests, and ongoing events from 9 p.m. to after midnight.
In Batavia Dutch forces report seizure of critical oil fields in Sumatra controlling Djambi and southern Sumatra, claiming damage to Indonesian installations. The operation aims to complete its campaign before New Year’s Eve, with reports of ongoing military activity as the Dutch press details actions and timing. Mrs Eliza Snuffer 81 of Harpers Ferry died after a three week illness at home. Born September 14 1867 near Oak Grove Raleigh County she was the daughter of John and Paulina Harper Howery. Survived by brother Isaac Howery Beaver and sisters Mrs Sarah Godby Oak Grove Mrs Laura Hendricks Matscott and several nieces and nephews. Funeral from Mount Tabor Baptist Church at 1 pm conducted by Rev B C Jerine with burial in Saintivers Branch family cemetery.
Fayette County roads are passable today after last night's snowfall. State Road Commission crews are working, mainly in the Bear Mountain area, with ongoing clearance in one section.
The Associated Press reports a prolonged sub zero freeze hitting the Midwest from Nebraska to Michigan as a snow storm moves away. Temperatures dip to 4 below in Norfolk Nebraska and Rochester Minnesota while rain falls along the Atlantic coast. The storm thins but brings scattered cold air and flurries to Memphis Louisville and Elkins as high temps reach 78 in Jacksonville.

Ada Tyree of Charleston went to Beckley police claiming she had no place to stay and received help to rent a hotel room. Hours later she was arrested for shoplifting. three dresses found on her. She pleaded guilty before Magistrate J P Meadows who sent her to Raleigh County Jail unless she posts 500 dollar bond pending grand jury action.
Funeral services for A L Richmond 47 of Sandstone, a longtime Chesapeake and Ohio Railway employee, will be held at Sandstone Baptist Church with Rev C H Martin officiating. Survived by wife Eula and sisters Myrtle Cole, Lillian Gross, plus brothers C E Richmond and others.
Lewisburg will host the New Year's Shanghai Parade with crowds gathering. Mason Bell Jr. chairs the event and says judges will be brought in from nearby towns to oversee the proceedings.
Pure Oil Company to provide personal insurance for surgical medical and hospital benefits free of charge to its employees nationwide starting January 1. The plan covers 14 Beckley and Wyoming County employees and adds to existing life and retirement plans. Dependents may join at a nominal fee.
Four Princeton region men enlist in the U S Army or Air Force. Eldie Dent, son of Mrs. Laura Dent, joins three years in the regular army. Hue C. Collins, brother of Mrs. Thelma Adkins, enlists for three years and is assigned to A S A 1257 Fort Dix New Jersey. Frank C. Vest, son of Mrs. Bessie West, enlists for one year. Carl E. Hazelwood, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carson Hazelwood, enlists in the air force for three years.
Athens judge notes the Monroe County High School Literary Oration Festival at Union on February 23. Dr. W. B. Bonege Es head of the Concord College English department will speak as the featured lecturer. Extemporaneous speaking and debating events are planned.
Four color folders detailing the Bluestone Dam project are prepared by U S Engineers staff and will be distributed by chamber of commerce members in Hinton West Virginia. The effort aims to inform local businesses and residents about the dam and its development.
The Raleigh County Farm Bureau will sponsor the first county sewing class conducted by clothing expert Miss Ruth Knoch from West Virginia University. She will demonstrate shortcuts with emphasis on remodeling old garments. Demonstrations will be held for farm women clubs older 4 H clubs and 4 H club leaders. County agent H B Thomas invites groups to contact the farm office in the courthouse.
National Guard pay for enlisted personnel and officers of Headquarters Company and Company F will be distributed at the assembly between 7 30 p m and 8 00 p m. Return to home by register staff writer Pineville Mr and Mrs Everett H Collins and their seven year old daughter Carole have returned home after visiting Mrs Collins parents and Mr and Mrs Robert Lewis of Oak Hill Christmas visitors of the Collintes.
