Mariner 2 Begins Sun Orbit After Venus Flyby
Reports from the 129th meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science say Mariner 2 measurements near Venus indicate no detectable magnetic field at 21,594 miles. If Venus lacks a strong field, a manned mission would avoid drag during approach and landing. Mariner 2 continues transmitting data as it enters an elliptical solar orbit and is expected to pass the sun at about 65.5 million miles tonight.
