Washington UPI column recalls Dr Willard Edwards of Honolulu who invented a perpetual calendar in 1919. He argues years count from zero, meaning 1962 begins the 1 963rd year. Edwards has campaigned since 1943 and notes 1 962 years complete by next Monday.
Rep. John M. Slack proposes a Weston to Beckley highway funded largely by 90 percent federal money under the Area Redevelopment Act. The plan aims to spur economic growth in low income counties through interstate–style construction and expanded industrial access, linking Braxton Nicholas and Fayette counties into a broader highway triangle.
New York's Empire State Building was sold for 65 million to Prudential Insurance Co of America. Lawrence Wien will hold a 30 year renewable lease. Crown, the current owner, will receive 65 million from Wien. Prudential will buy title from Wien for 29 million and pay 3.75 million for future improvements.
In Brookyln Michigan police hunted a killer after an elderly minister Rev Roy Decker 72 was beaten with a hammer and left to burn in a farmhouse bedroom. Decker's body was found under a blanket with the hammer nearby, and investigators theorized a deliberate attempt to incinerate him.
A fire at the 17 story Mayflower Hotel on Central Park West in New York killed three people, including a firefighter, and injured nine others. Firefighters say the blaze started in Murray Wyzell’s ninth floor bedroom and spread via the hallway. About 400 guests evacuated as flames trapped stairwells and smoke filled upper floors, with investigators withholding the cause.

Manager Harry Ellis says Bald Knob Ski Slopes near Ghent will not open for skiing until five inches more snow falls. The West Virginia Department of Commerce pamphlet Ski West Virginia lists ice skating and other winter sports, but skating facilities have never worked here. If opened, only skiing will be offered and no snowmaking plans are set.
Mikhail Menshikov, Russia's amiable ambassador to the United States since 1958, is set to be replaced next week by Anatoli Dobrynin. Sources say Menshikov will leave Washington Jan 2 after arranging a farewell reception with the diplomatic corps. Dobrynin, 42, formerly headed the Russian Foreign Ministry's American section and has served in Moscow and the United Nations.
Rosemary Starry 30 braved flames at least twice to rescue eight children and her husband Elmer Starry 30 as a pre dawn Fontana fire destroyed their one story home. Fireman Fred West and Rob Szabo aided, West injured minor cuts, two children and husband listed critical, five children from previous marriage.
Mrs Aurora M Solida 26 of Oberlin Ohio was killed when her car struck a concrete bridge abutment on West Virginia 47 near Smithville in Ritchie County. Her four year old daughter Michelle Solida and 15 year old sister Marcia Wilson were injured and treated at Camden-Clark Hospital.
Pittsburgh area Shippingport atomic power station reached a historic milestone by generating a billion kilowatt hours of electricity. The output would power about 80,000 homes for four years, marking a significant achievement in peaceful atomic energy use.
President Sekou Toure told Guinean Democratic party delegates in Labe that an alleged Communist attempt to overthrow his government aimed to start a Marxist revolution in Africa with backing from Moscow Paris and Dakar. William Cox a 103 year old resident of Cirencester England died Tuesday. He had claimed to have smoked for 100 years and said he first used tobacco at age three.
A scheduled meeting of Laos princes Souphanouvong Souvanna Phouma and Boun Oum collapsed after a 30 minute session. Souphanouvong saidZurich talks are finished and warned the government is avoiding peace. Boun Oum rejected further meetings and blamed American war-mongers for prolonging fighting.
Denver based scientists at the AAAS session declare life’s mysteries are explained by molecular structure. Henry Borsook of Caltech and L B Lerman of the University of Colorado School of Medicine describe cells built from specific molecular configurations and nucleic acids as blueprints guiding growth, reproduction, and function.
In Silvis Raymond Cabry rode a horse into town after a nine inch snowfall made driving hazardous. He was charged with improperly using a sidewalk as a bridle path. Also noted: Montgomery Ward plans to rent tuxedos by mail to grandsons. A mynah bird named Maybe vanished, and a Milwaukee man appeals a $3 parking fine after measuring meters near an intersection.
A four car elevated train derailed near a north Philadelphia station injuring 38, none seriously. The dead man was Earl Gibberson, about 50, of Philadelphia, crushed between cars and a guard rail.
Former first lady Mrs Woodrow Wilson is seriously ill at her Washington home. The 89 year old widow of the former president has a respiratory ailment and complications after about three weeks of illness. Her doctor said she is holding her own.
Katanga plans to fly twenty delegates to Leopoldville for constitutional talks seen as a step toward peace with the central government. The move follows Katanga’s compliance with a pact signed at Kitona and signals possible progress in the Congo crisis. Diplomatic ties between Belgium and the Congo resume after 17 months as Edward Longerstaey presents credentials. Katanga security guarantees for delegates are pledged.
Howard B. Thornburg of Barboursville, a longtime Cabell County soil conservationist, was named man of the year in West Virginia agriculture by Progressive Farmer magazine. Thornburg led local conservation efforts, chaired Guyan Soil Conservation District since 1945, and served on the Cabell County Board of Education and Farm Bureau for decades.
