A stubborn blaze at the Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville destroyed the historic four story brick building after hours of effort. About 50 to 75 guests were registered at the time, with one guest unaccounted for. Property loss estimated at around 2 million dollars. The hotel opened in 1856 and its bricks were handmade by slaves.

Deputy Woodrow Tolliver, about 41, was seriously stabbed while helping a man, Virgil Rutherford, 58, near Maben. Tolliver drove Rutherford to his home then was stabbed in the neck, knocked Rutherford into a ditch, and sought aid. Rutherford was arrested for attempted murder as Tolliver received seven pints of blood and over 100 stitches. Tolliver remained in good condition at hospital.
UPI reports the United Nations will deploy 900 Congolese national army troops to Katanga. The first 90 will be airlifted to Kamina Base this week under U.N. command led by Gen. Sean McKeown. Elisabethville remained quiet after a 15 day pre Christmas battle.
