Mullens residents will vote February 4 in a special election on adopting a city manager form of government. The Charter Commission met to certify the election and the home rule charter, prepared by the Charter Board, has been endorsed by local organizations including the Lions Club.
Patty Burgess, a 15 year old eighth grader from Minden, will enter Pinecrest Sanitarium in January. Her history class gave a sunshine shower and her English class a fruit shower. Classmate Madiline Kincaid delivered the gifts. Patty plans to open one gift a day to have presents until January 25.
A Christmas program is set for 7:30 tonight at Thurmond Union Church. Mrs. William Whitlock and Mrs. Ray Robinson lead, with music directed by Mrs. G. H. Ernest. A visit from Santa Claus is expected.
Dallas Bishop of Wyco is in Beckley Hospital with a possible fractured skull after a beating at a Bud dance hall Saturday night. He was moved from Taylor Dearing Hospital in Mullens to Beckley yesterday following emergency care.
Pineville residents face city hog and hog pen removal after council vote authorizes enforcement of the hog ban ordinance. Mayor Vaughan Stewart said enforcement begins January 1947 for those who have not fattened and killed hogs. The report notes previous delays and cites fines of five dollars for illegal garbage disposal into nearby river and Rockcastle Creek.
Virginian Railway reports an all time high coal output in Mullens area for the second week after a 17 day stoppage. A total of 300000 tons were moved with 4262 cars loaded in six days and 1639 cars sent inland to rail yards and ports.
Mrs. William P. Miller and her daughter Deanna Jo Miller of Mullens have arrived on Saipan Island to join William P. Miller stationed with the U S Navy. Mrs. Miller was formerly Olga D Antoni.
The Christmas cantata Child Jesus was presented by the St Pauls Methodist Church choir Ansted last night. The junior, intermediate and senior choruses sang under Mrs W A Bragg with soloists Cuthbert Skaggs Stanton Crist Clay Mink Gordon Mae Hendricks Doris Massey Jackie Crist Johnny Martindale and readers including Rev Charles Stevenson and Helen Hundley before a large audience.
Fayetteville county offices will close Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday for a three day Christmas holiday. Offices including the sheriff prosecuting attorney county clerk circuit clerk county agent and assessor will reopen Monday December 23 and Friday December 27. The Board of Education also closes Tuesday and Wednesday with a skeleton crew on Monday and Thursday for emergencies.
