Small Mine Owners Agree To Pay Royalty
More than half of 66 small mine operations in District 29 reportedly signed an agreement with the United Mine Workers of America to resume coal royalty payments after pickets shut the mines on November 9. District President George Titler said about 220 miners lost welfare benefits due to unpaid 40 cent per ton royalties, with around 100 miners in the district still lacking benefit cards. Nationwide, about 825 southern West Virginia miners lost benefits, including 600+ in District 17 led by Raymond O. Lewis. Titler said UMWA hopes to meet early next week with operators still idled, as a Tuesday meeting was postponed.
