Pettigrew Stopped Boxing Film Show in Beckley

District Attorney B J Pettigrew halted plans to show a Dempsey Tunney fight film at the Lyric theater after W V Commissioner Rardin and the prosecutor advised action. The film had been in Beckley for days despite prize fighting being illegal in West Virginia. Fans were disappointed as the theater canceled the screening pending legal guidance.

Thurman Chosen Truant Officer for Town District

W C Squire Thurmond has been chosen and accepted the role as truant or attendance officer for Town district schools. Superintendent J G Umstattd announced the move as schools aim to raise district attendance from the November 89 percent reading. Each percentage point gain saves about 400 to 500 dollars per student, underscoring the district’s goal of reaching 100 percent attendance.

Sheriff Collects Big Sum from Delinquents

Sheriff Aubrey O. Smith notes that since the 1925 delinquent lists were published and land sales began on Monday, the force has collected 12,460.09 from land redeemers as of yesterday. An additional 8600 was raised from various property sales in the list. More taxpayers are expected to pay for 1925 before the lists are sent to the auditor in a few days. Many tracts remain unpaid and will revert to the state.

Town District Schools Fire Inspection Report Finds Hazards

A. A. Dorsey, assistant state fire marshal, inspected several Town District schools and issued recommendations to curtail fire hazards if funds allow. Woodrow Wilson High School earned the highest rating, with praise for the new building and a suggestion to place a few extinguishers. Schools inspected include Woodrow Wilson High, Mat-scott, Teel, Sprague, Stratton, Central annex, Junior high, Lincoly, and Sylvia.

Braxton County Seeks Repayment of Old Debts

Braxton County court ordered Prosecuting Attorney J B Cutlip to sue nine men for shortages found in audits by the state tax commission totaling 87813.74 with 2573 in interest, about 10386.74 to be collected. Additional 4290 from the old sinking fund was not turned over. Citizens’ investigation reports progress, with earlier collections and forthcoming inquiries into district road funds and fiscal practices.

Former Local Pastor Passes in Huntington

Rev. Lewis Pendleton Groves, former Baptist pastor of Huntington, died Saturday at his home on Third Avenue. He was 57, born April 1, 1870 near Union, entered ministry young, later evangelism, survived by widow Lena Shires Groves and seven children. Burial in Alderson, ten thousand delegates expected at Chicago shoe retailers convention January 9-12.

Marshall Plumley Dies at Blue Jay

Marshall Plumley, 82, died last night at Blue Jay at his son Clayton’s home from old age complications. He leaves 48 grandchildren, nine sons, five brothers and sisters, and a widow. Funeral services are set for tomorrow afternoon at Blue Jay church with interment at Table Rock. Rev. Powiall will officiate. Calfee undertakers in charge. Surviving children include A. B. Rev W B Harvey to Preach Here Sunday

Rev W B Harvey arrives in the city and will preach at the First Baptist Church tomorrow evening. Church members hope he will accept the call to lead the local church though he has not announced his intentions. Harvey was recently invited to the Beckley church from Newport Kentucky where he currently serves a growing congregation.

County Recovers 27125 in Suit

Raleigh county obtained a judgment from the National Surety company for 27125.88 plus interest in a case arising after a shortage in former Sheriff P. L. Bhinkenship’s accounts. The official died in 1924 and the suit, led by Prosecuting Attorney Scott and assistant Ki bb. Bowers, settled after audits and a circuit-term entry oversight. The total with interest exceeded 27000 dollars.

Boone County Wins Federal Court Suit

A Boone County jury in Charleston awarded George Johnson 825 000 in a federal suit over injuries from a July 1926 Whitesville bridge collapse. Johnson, of Noel Virginia, claimed fractured skulls, two broken arms and eye loss after the suspension span gave way during a carnival crowd. Local Teachers Assist in Shady Spring Score

Local junior and senior high principals and several district teachers aided in scoring Shady Springs district data last week. Substitutes filled in, with some teachers spending one or two days in a neighboring district. On Tuesday night many teachers worked at Woodrow Wilson High School to finalize the data.
