A 33 year old Cool Ridge man, Robert Mont Simmons Jr., is in satisfactory condition at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital after a Sunday shooting. Police say his 14 year old stepson fired a 22 caliber rifle in the front yard following a family argument. investigation continues.
The Justice Department reports a 7 percent rise in crime over the past year despite a drop in crime in 34 big cities. Sen. McGovern calls Nixon’s tough-on-crime rhetoric a cruel hoax while FBI data show violence and property crimes rising, with 5,995,200 serious crimes nationwide.
The 1971 West Virginia crime index was 1009.1 per 100000, well under the national 2006.7. WV recorded 113 murders and manslaughters 87 forcible rapes 620 robberies 1491 aggravated assaults 6792 burglaries 6635 larcenies of 50 or more and 1942 auto thefts.
Property owners who have not paid their 1971 taxes can avoid a publication fee by paying before month’s end. Sheriff’s deputy D L Keadle notes a two and a half percent discount for 1972 taxes paid this month and for second-half 1972 taxes paid before end of February 1973. The 1974 delinquent tax list will be published after September 1.
Roy Phelps was reported in good condition at the Veterans Administration Hospital after being struck by a Chesapeake and Ohio train around 9 p.m. Monday. The accident caused a brief delay to the train on the tracks behind the Beckley Newspapers Corp. buildings on Prince Street with head injuries and bruises.
West Virginia officials said final data will guide future surface mining permits after flooding in Mingo McDowell Logan and Wyoming counties caused 56.9 million in damage. Latimer noted most slides were unrelated to active mining and focused on reclaiming old mined land. Final report expected in about a week.
Capt Ritchie of Reidsville North Carolina credited with downing a North Vietnamese MiG 21 west of Hanoi to become the first USAF ace of the Indochina war. His co pilot Capt Charles D De Bellevue of Lafayette Louisiana also credited with three kills as they flew protection for bombers over North Vietnam from Thailand. The command notes 49 MiGs down this year and 160 in the war, with 66 American planes lost to MiGs since 1965.
An Aug 13 West Virginia Turnpike crash at milepost 33 killed Leo T. Yon 46 of Charleston and his daughter Michelle 17, in a head on collision with a second vehicle. Yon’s sons Scott 14 and Leo Jr. 10 were injured and in good condition at Beckley Hospital while three others in the other car were injured but released.
A suit filed for Robert B. Akers doing business as Appalachian Electric Heat and Insulation Co. seeks 1100 from Kathryn and T. T. Collier of Beckley for a four ton whole house air conditioning unit installed at 113 Phil Ave Beckley. Gray Lumber Co. Inc. sues John C. Conklin Jr. Sophia for 2123.51 on account. The Modern Inc. sues Jerry L. Steen Beckley for 1250.51 as balance due on contracts. Oak Hill Hospital Inc. sues Matthew Cooney Beckley and Nannie May Sheppard Cooney for 604.62 for services to Nannie May Cooney from March 30 1970 to April 6 1970.
Washington reports the U.S. Office of Education approved a 433000 Head Start grant for the McDowell County West Virginia chapter of the Council of the Southern Mountains. Sen. Jennings Randolph and Sen. Robert Byrd announced the funds to provide part day preschool training for 405 youngsters over nine months.
Raleigh County Circuit Court jurors for the September term were ordered to report at 9 am. on September 18 for grand jurors with 22 summonses. petit jurors report September 25. Secretary Laird says U.S. force levels in Vietnam stand at about 37,000, near a 39,000 target by Sept. 1, while Nixon prepares a Hawaii summit with Japan's Kakuei Tanaka and Bunker reports on Saigon political issues. Bombing will continue until negotiations North of the DMZ yield a settlement.
Fairmont West Virginia faces a critical water delivery problem as the pumping system cannot move enough water from the reservoir to the filtration plant. City Water Director Anthony Agrippe warns of possible non essential use bans unless a solution is found, noting rain will not help and Labor Day may provide pumping relief.
General Motors and Ford asked for average price increases of 54 and 59 dollars respectively to cover costs of new safety bumper and exhaust standards. Chrysler, American Motors, and International Harvester sought even larger boosts, with hearings to determine final action after they review testimony.

Rev. R. E. Trotter, pastor at Wesleyan Chapel on Johnstown Road, travels to Ireland for his brother Willie Trotter's funeral after Willie was killed by a land mine near Newtown Butler County Fermanagh Northern Ireland. Willie owned a farm near there and was killed while investigating shooting at a Protestant home.
