Army Reveals New Descent Device for Airborne Gear
The Army and Air Forces announced a new recoil tube firing sand projectiles to slow the landing of jeeps guns and other heavy equipment dropped for airborne forces. The U shaped tube contains an explosive charge in its bend and drives sand from its ends to oppose descent. A paratrooper with full gear could be decelerated by a sand gun weighing about 20 pounds, versus a 300 pound load. Another device, tested at Wright Field Ohio, uses a detonated charge between the load and chute to create a downward shock that acts as a brake.
