Tropical storm Alma weakly brushed the North Carolina coast with 30 to 45 mph winds and 1 to 3 foot tides. Advisories placed its center near Cape Hatteras moving about 18 mph. In Raleigh County more than 25,000 students begin enrollment with 10 sub age children testing through Sept 14 at the Mental Health Center.

The Rev. S A Abram 65 died at 12 45 a m in a local hospital after a long heart illness. He led Central Baptist Church Beckley for 27 years and was honored in a West Virginia Baptist Association testimonial.
