East End School Approved At Oak Hill

Fayette County Board of Education approved a six room East End school at Oak Hill with bids to build the six rooms and three additional rooms if funds allow. Eleven teacher resignations were accepted and thirty two more teachers were placed for the coming year with a long list of transfers noted.

Rohrbough Certified Republican Candidate for Third District

Oak Hill ro rf E G Rohrbough of Glenville is certified as the Republican nominee for Congress in the Third District after defeating Rufus C Hurt 5141 to 4869. Incumbent Cleveland M Bailey leads Democrats with 12541 votes to Louis Craig 5475.

Charles Adkins Dies At Highland Mountain

Funeral services for Charles Adkins 72 of Highland Mountain follow his death at home yesterday morning after a long illness. The funeral is set for tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at the home with burial in Smith Cemetery. He was a United Mine Workers member last employed by Laurel Creek Coal Co. Surviving are his wife Sarah Adkins, four brothers Gus Peter and Sam Adkins Will Adkins and Beelick Knob, two sisters Dora Thomas and Jennie Adkins, and two sons Beecher and Waller Adkins.

Contracts Let To Rebuild Four Streets At Oak Hill

City Council approved contracts for reconstruction of four Oak Hill streets with bids from Appalachian Construction Company of Philadelphia. Thompson Street 11000 dollars, Mankin Street 10000, Railroad Street 4000, Second Street Highland Park Addition 10006. Highland Avenue and Beech Street bids rejected as too high. Third Street petition lacked signatures.

Four Circles Hold Monthly Meetings

Four Circles of the First Presbyterian Church held meetings in Mullens and Ipoca. Circle Three hosted a stork shower for Mrs. M. W. Morris, Circle One met at the Hargraves home, Circle Two met on Highland Avenue, and Circle Four met at Church Street with Bible study led by Mrs. Cannada. The next gathering will be at Mrs. Lucille Hayes’s home.

Eight Fayette Couples Get Marriage Permits

Fayetteville reports Lacy Neely county clerk granted marriage licenses to eight couples from Winona Laurel Creek Carlisle Scarbro London Smithers Gauley Bridge Clover area. Couples include Raymond Calhoun and Jacqueline Horracks 21, Charles Fairfax 23 and Elizabeth Pankey 18, Edward Jones 24 and Rose Logan 26, James Lewis 24 and Edna Macy 22, Richard Rowe 37 and Helen Kopinski 30, Carl Singleton 23 and Mary Felty 22, Winston 23 and Goldie Blake 24, William Workman 23 and Vivian Nicely 18.

12 Pass State Driving Tests

Mullens state police examined 15 applicants for state drivers licenses. Twelve passed the tests, and two who had failed previous weeks finally earned permission to apply for licenses.

Elderly workers injured by Beckley ice cream truck

Two Mullens street department workers were struck at 1 35 pm Wednesday by an Imperial Ice Cream truck driven by George Halash 26 of East Beckley. William Harrison 65 suffered a possible hip fracture and leg injuries but was discharged after treatment. Cowan 72 appeared unhurt. Halash was held on reckless driving charges with $500 bond.

Little Sue Stover Demonstrates Remarkable Nerve

Mullens West Virginia reports 10 year old Sue Carol Stover daughter of Mr and Mrs M T Stover of Deegans Avenue showed unusual endurance after injuring her left hand while playing Monday afternoon. She was examined by Dr J F Biggart who noted a fracture but the girl endured the setting without anesthesia and kept a stiff upper lip.

Tennessee Man Fined For Drunken Driving

Mullens J. Sl. Reece, 46, of Tradé Tennessee, fined 100 dollars and costs for operating a produce truck while intoxicated. Reece was taken into custody by Mullens State and city police and entered a guilty plea before City Clerk Gordon B. McGraw.

Mullens Man Fined On Assault Charge

Clarence Barrett of Juddece ig spent 10 days in jail in default of a ten dollar fine on assault and battery. Magistrate R Mr Stovall stated Barrett was charged by Rosa Mae Lee of Mullens for kicking her during an argument at a Mullens theatre.
