Congress Moves to Adjourn Tonight in Long Session

Washington Congress leaders opened a sudden effort to adjourn by tonight if possible. Democratic Leader Barkley said there is a chance to finish the long session tonight depending on progress by conferees on the Wagner bill and a quick conference on the third deficiency appropriation bill. He noted earlier there was no reason to hurry.

Stepfather Held for Murder in Hendersonville

Hendersonville North Carolina 28 year old T O Hazelwood former Butler University athlete is held on charges of ravishing and killing his 12 year old stepdaughter Gloria Hauser Coroner Bruice Cox says the body was found at the bottom of a 120 foot ravine last Tuesday Hazelwood was found near the scene in a dazed condition and is under treatment for mental shock at the hospital.

School Board Picks Principal Tonight

The board of education meets at 7 to hire a principal for Shady Spring High School and carry over business from last Tuesday. County Superintendent FE Van Dorsey says a successor to Randolph Norton, who resigned last week, will be named. Seven applicants are vying for the post, with names including George Parker and others. Also on the agenda is whether to fund part of a 4-H director’s salary, a practice used in several counties.

Chamber Hopes for Beckley Term in Federal Court

The Beckley chamber seeks a term of federal court citing delays from judiciary re organization debate. A Neely letter faulted friction over the bill, saying he won’t sponsor it now but will push next session. Fairmont also seeks a term while Beckley avoids sending accused to Bluefield or Lewisburg for trial.

Legionnaires Hold Charleston Amercian Legion Convention Start

Thousands of Legionnaires and wives arrived for the 19th state convention in Charleston with street scenes festive for the four day event. Candidates for department commander campaigned Monday ahead of Saturday's general session and Monday ballots. Governors and officials will address the gathering including Lt Governor Holt, Ruth Pell Miller and J Monroe Johnson. The program features drum corps contests, a beauty candidate, memorial address by John J. Cornwell and a banquet toastmastered by Louis A. Johnson. The auxiliary plans a four day session and election of a successor to Mrs C P Wilhelm.

Parker Offered School Job in Putnam County

George M. Parker, former assistant superintendent of Raleigh county schools, was offered an assistant superintendency in Putnam county by Superintendent R. S. White. He may accept after deciding in a few days and has withdrawn from Shady Spring high principal vacancy. Parker, who came to Raleigh in 1920, has 11 years in Raleigh schools and hopes to stay in the county if possible. He thanked patrons and friends for support.

Killarney Man Accused Of Theft

John Javey was ordered held for action of the grand jury by Magistrate H. T. Hardaway of Killarney on auto theft charges. He did not post bond and was sent to jail. The accused allegedly took a car owned by Arnold Hatcher of Besoco.

Officers Seek Missing Miner Ed Midkiff

Ed Midkiff a 44 year old Long Branch miner has been missing for two weeks after leaving home to visit his brother in Jonben. Family and officers searched the area and the missing man is described as six feet two inches tall with blue eyes and a dark complexion. His wife inquired at the county jail about any arrest and provided his description.

Accused Man Freed of Charge in Juvenile Case

Barnard Parsons of Sophia was released from a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor by Magistrate Frank Lemon after the child failed to appear for the hearing. The child's father, Lon Redden, had sworn out a warrant for Parsons' arrest and the hearing was set for 7 o'clock last night.

Quake Strikes Manila As Refugees Arrive From Shanghai

A double quake rattled Manila during the landing of 376 refugees aboard the President Jefferson from Shanghai. Buildings and churches damaged, fires started, and injuries reported though no deaths. The tremors, felt 200 miles away, came about 8 p.m. as refugees faced a terrifying welcome.

Cecyle and Von Daniel bought two lots in the Hollywood Addition from the Bank of Raleigh, a deed recorded today at the county clerk's office showed. E. L. and Mary J. Morton transferred a lot in the Stratton Addition to Beckley to Frances H. Morton. The coal underlying 1.46 acres of land on the Quinnimont Road was purchased from J. E. Hurt by the Koppers Coal Company.

Accident Victim Dies After Truck Hit Miner Baker

Clarence Baker a 22 year old miner of Stanaford died in a hospital today from injuries after being struck by a truck as he walked home from work about 4 am yesterday. State police said the driver Will Johnson will be charged with manslaughter and reckless driving. Funeral services will be held at his brother Lawrence Baker’s home Sunday.

Former Worker Accuses Weirton Steel Leaders

Kenneth Koch a former Weirton Steel employee testified at a labor board hearing that President T E Millsop attended a meeting forming the Weirton Steel Employees security league. The Steel Workers Organizing Committee charges intimidation by the security league and a company sponsored union. Koch, who worked 1923 to 1936, says he was demoted after testifying in 1934 on charges of dominating the employee representation plan and was discharged last year after the CIO began activities.

Monroe School Janitors Named for Union and Peterstown Areas

Monroe County board of education hired bus drivers and janitors for the new term. Guy Biggs announced routes for drivers from Rock Camp to Peterstown and other areas. Coal bids were let and insurance approved. Vacancies in Union and Greenville high school commercial departments will be filled soon.

Eighteen Hurt as Shell Hits Navy Cruiser in Shanghai

In Shanghai the American cruiser Augusta, flagship of the Asiatic fleet, was struck by an unknown one inch shell during fierce Chinese Japanese artillery and air attacks along the Whangpoo river. One sailor Freddie J. Falgout of Raceland La was killed and 18 wounded. most officers and crew were below decks. The blaze and bombardment raged as refugees were evacuated toward Manila aboard the President Hoover.
