Dr. J. H. Green and county health nurses immunize residents of Slab Fork today against smallpox and diphtheria. County health officer Dr. W. W. Hume says a typhoid fever clinic will be held at Coal City on Monday.
A four motor Russian monoplane on a commercial airway route from the North Pole toward Fairbanks Alaska neared New York. The signal corps station at Fairbanks intercepted a message that the ship passed over the Pole at 4 45 a m east standard time. The aircraft flew at about 6000 meters in temperatures around 35 below zero near the Pole.
In St. Louis a 27-year-old mother, Mrs. Lenore King of St. Clair, Mo., confessed to poisoning her six-year-old son in a hotel room. She planned to kill her five-year-old daughter Jeannine and herself after purchasing three sandwiches and spreading poison on them. Jeannine bit the sandwich but spat it out. the mother initially claimed the boy swallowed poison by accident from her suitcase.
George W. Asbury, 47, of Sophia, died in a Stotes bury mine after reportedly being crushed when he fell from a car where he served as brakeman. Burial plans place the body in Berwind with services at Hartwell Sunday. He leaves a widow, six children, a brother Flave, sisters Deliah Sizemore and Noah Stewart, and his mother Emerine Asbury.
In New York 150 firemen and police searched a rain wrecked Staten Island tenement for two missing women after a collapse killed 19. A steam shovel aided the sift of sodden rubble as District Attorney Frank H. Innes planned to seek a grand jury investigation Monday, with three other probes underway.
William McKinley Mitchem 21 of Beckley and Laura McGuffin 17 of Prosperity applied for a marriage license at the county clerk’s office yesterday. Homer Everett Lyons 22 and Evelyn Davis 21, both of Beckley, also asked for a license.

Charleston mourns M F Matheny former legislator and city council member who died today at Big Chimney after an extended illness. A leader in state politics since 1896 he was elected Wyoming county prosecuting attorney and later served Raleigh county in the state senate in 1902 and the house of delegates from the same district in 1908.
The body of four year old Joan Kuleba, missing 24 hours, was found in a swamp shack near South Beach Staten Island. She appears to have been assaulted. a rope was tied to the cellar door with bricks on her back. The killing marks the second such crime in Greater New York in two weeks.
Luther D. Fink was nominated today for commander of the Beckley post of the American Legion. No other candidate had been put up at noon. Nominations close at 8 pm with the election to follow. Other nominees include Magee, Dickenson, Mrs Jarrell, Williams, Ney vell, Ed Dorsey, Conway, Harrison, Goldstein, Bowers, and a voting Executive committee slate.
Acey Duncan and Howard Jones, both of Pemberton, were acquitted of attempted felonious assault in Magistrate J. P Meadows' court last night. Neighbor Cleve Tate said rocks were thrown at his house narrowly missing his child, but no witnesses could be found. Children saw rocks over the fence but could not identify the throwers.
Eulah Farmer, an East Park resident, waived preliminary hearing on a charge of carrying a pistol and was bound over to the grand jury by Magistrate Frank Lemon. Witnesses said she grew angry at another woman, left home with a pistol, and was seen with the gun later. Minnie Leftwich paid a $5 fine after a fight near a beer parlor that led to the dispute.
O B Harris spoke for the Raleigh County Safety Council at a Kiwanis meeting urging education to curb highway deaths in 1937. He noted 21 deaths and 81 injuries in six months and called for action against drunken driving, enlisting Kiwanis members and promoting a 50 cent membership fee. A North Fork delegation backed John Child for lieutenant governor and Dr Leonard Riggleman attended from Charleston. In Fayetteville Lookout justice Harry S Walker faced trial on a drunk driving charge. jurors were seated and trial began, with proceedings delayed and a grand jury action on conspiracy ultimately not indicting.

Mann of Beaver shows a Siamese twin cantaloupe in Raleigh county. Mrs Alma Gregory of Raleigh owns another giant tomato linked to Treadway, hinting at a quirky newsroom culture.
John Machnice of East Wickham was serving two terms in the county jail after Magistrate J. P. Meadows reduced a felonious assault charge to assault and battery. He was fined $10 and costs for assault and $5 and costs for drunkenness. Meadows cited testimony about molestation of his daughter and Machnice allegedly stabbing with an ice pick, though witnesses saw no weapon. Machnice could not pay his fines.
Small price changes ruled in today's stock market with gains for Anaconda United States Rubber Northern Pacific and General Electric while Bethlehem Steel New York Central and International Nickel posted declines.
Senate judiciary subcommittee swiftly approved the nomination of Senator Black of Alabama to the Supreme Court. President Roosevelt had been assured by Attorney General Cummings that the appointment is legal and constitutional. All members except Austin of Vermont supported the nomination and rejected delay, while Austin questioned eligibility under a new retirement act.
PITTSBURGH The Weirton steel company charged the National Labor Relations Board acted in concert with the Steel Workers organizing committee in asking dismissal of the board s complaint charging the steel concern with interfering with the union. The steel firm a subsidiary of the National Steel corporation said the complaint was the result of an arrangement between the board and the union to assist the SWOC in its efforts to force Weirton employees against their wishes to join the union.
Washington leaders consider delaying the wage hour bill until next year to hasten adjournment. The Senate approved measure sits blocked in the House rules committee, with eight votes needed for release. Administration forces count on only four definite supporters.
Bonnie Green bought about half an acre on Banks avenue from Raleigh Coal and Coke Co per deed in the county clerk’s office. Ida S. M. O’Dell and Rose W. Meadows sold F. H. Ballard a Parkview addition lot. A Z and Conrad Litz trustees conveyed a Rhodell lot to Daisy Barker for 275 dollars.
