State Should Play Well If Players Can Stay Healthy
West Virginia State coach Colin T. Cameron enters his fifth year optimistic about the 1972 season. He cites 19 returning lettermen, including seven offensive and eight defensive starters, and notes last year’s 1-5 conference record and 2-8 overall finish were hurt by injuries. Camp opens August 18 with two a days through August 27 as the team aims to stay healthy and improve. Returning leaders include fullback Fred Venson, halfback Herb Harris, quarterback Larry Watkins, and linemen Mike Belcher, Lynn Dudley, John Valentine, and Don Hicks. The defense brings back eight of 11 starters led by captain Jack Summers with safety duo Robert Lewis and Stanley Sims, rover Howard Dorsey, and linemen John McComas and Greg McGrew. Local players Ray Davidson and Willard Jennings challenge for roster spots.
