Blacksville Mine Violation Reoccurs in Fire Tragedy

In Morgantown West Virginia two miners testified at a State Mines hearing into the July 22 Blacksville Noighen mine disaster that previous machinery moves violated safety rules. Frank Strakal and Herbert Halpeny described moving a large mineral carrier with workers nearby as a fire killed nine miners.

Nemo Inc. property on the 1921 By-Pass near Beckley has been leased to Control Products Inc. led by Perfecto Dacal Jr. The $12,000 annual rent includes a renewal option to extend at the same rate if notice is given by May 15, 1973. Flooding forces evacuations as Soak Creek overflows

Water covers areas in Stover and nearby towns with many basements flooded. At Soak Creek near Sophia residents report the water surpassing banks and running through yards. Alan Handy cites about 40 flooded basements while residents push for creek cleanout reforms. Crews work to clear landslide debris on several routes and build temporary dams to prevent more overflow.
