Sawyers Hails Release of Federal Road Funds
West Virginia Road Commissioner Burl A. Sawyers says the release of almost 42 million in federal funds brightens the state's highway program. The funds, part of 1.9 billion released by Commerce Secretary Luther Hodges, can be used for Interstate or state and local roads with dollar-for-dollar matching. Sawyers noted 230 million was allocated through July 1962, leaving WV 13.1 million short of its 1956 Highway Act total. He detailed 140 million spent, 15.5 million pending approval, 43.3 million in design, and 18.2 million uncommitted, with plans to match federal money quickly and a possible request for more state-financed road funds.
