Mayor Willy Brandt warned that fully alerted West Berlin police would crush anti American demonstrations by residents embittered by a Soviet linked killing of a teenage refugee. Berlin's 18,000 officers were ordered to use full force against rioters who attacked American military police and Soviet troops during violent demonstrations at the wall of shame site.
East Germany says it shot down a West German military jet after it violated East German airspace near Eisenach at 1 22 p m. The Berlin claim says warning shots preceded the downing and that the intruder did not land when ordered. West Germany denies details and notes a prior incident.
Record highs spread across the Dixie and Midwest as Springfield Missouri hit 101, Little Rock 105, St. Louis tying 1936 marks, Milwaukee 93, Louisville 98, Kansas City exceeding 100 for the first time since 1960, Austin marked 50 days without rain, and Louisiana reported 98 forest and brush fires amid drought with little relief expected until rainfall.
The region faces hot and humid conditions with scattered thunderstorms this afternoon and again on Tuesday. Highs reach 90 to 97 degrees, overnight lows 68 to 76, with Tuesday and Friday or Saturday staying in the 90s. Temperatures average 4 to 5 degrees above normal, little daily change, and showers possible across the south and north zones. Beckley shows a 62 low yesterday and 70 at 7 am today, 80 at noon. Oak Hill records 89 yesterday and 62 overnight with 71 at 7 am today. River readings are normal with Greenbrier and Lake clear. gauges show 1.7 and 1.9 gates open.
Maryland and Pennsylvania state police with K 9 units searched western areas after a suspected looter shot Maryland state trooper Corporal Robert D. Kirby. Kirby, wounded in the arm and hip, detained two of three suspects before the third fled in a car. the vehicle was later found abandoned near Sideling Hill Mountain. Kirby was listed in fair condition at Washington County Hospital after surgery.
The United States and the Soviet Union agreed to direct negotiations toward a comprehensive ban on nuclear tests. Arthur H. Dean and Vasily Kuznetsov will chair the talks aiming to draft a treaty based on the neutral nations plan, with no first meeting date set but expectations of soon discussions. India urged immediate talks using the plan as a basis, noting international inspection must be written into any treaty.
President Kennedy returned from a non political trip ahead of the November elections. His jet covered Los Angeles to Washington in about five hours. He spent Sunday at his sister’s beachfront home in Santa Monica and swam with beachgoers at the Lawford residence before returning to Beverly Hills. He then left for Andrews Air Force Base en route to Washington. There will be more such appearances.
UPI reports Sweden's Uppsala Seismological Institute recorded a 12 megaton atmospheric nuclear test by the Soviet Union in the Arctic Novaya Zemlya series. Official notes place the blast at 5 02 am EDT. This marks the third test in the current sequence following 40 megatons on Aug 5 and 3 megatons on Aug 10.
Washington action opens another Senate clash over farm policy with a second agriculture bill this session. Proxmire warned no farm program if mandatory feed grain controls return, while the administration shifted to a one year extension of voluntary feed grain. Algeria’s Political Bureau released the candidate list for the September 2 national assembly elections. Most seats are uncontested with one candidate per seat, including Ahmed Ben Bella and Ben Youssef Ben Khedda. Sixteen seats allocated to Europeans. assembly to form a government within a year while the army presses for military representation to safeguard policy control.
In Oxford England Jim Francis walked his black Labrador Trixie when he heard a clinking sound from inside the dog. At a veterinarian visit eight large stones were removed from the stomach. Francis joked he will not throw stones again but a football instead.
A gunman sought for wounding a Maryland state trooper shot himself in the right temple as 55 officers flushed him from a wooded area west of Hancock. Unofficial reports indicated the gunman died.
Forty four Register and Post Herald carriers earned a bus trip to the West Virginia State Fair in Fairlea by adding at least three new subscribers to their routes in a two week period this month. The award, sponsored for the fifth straight year by Beckley Newspapers Corp., honored top performers alongside circulation manager Robert L Amick and other local staff.
STOCKHOLM UP I Mrs Sherri Finkbine says her abortion, here a complete success, may keep her in hospital through week end. Vatican Radio calls the operation a crime, while her husband Robert, a Phoenix teacher, says they hope to be home with their four children soon. Finkbine, a former children's TV performer, sought a U S abortion banned there, and traveled to avoid a deformed fetus after taking thalidomide. Doctors told him the fetus was deformed. Swedish papers carried the report without comment. Vatican Radio maintained the act was morally and legally wrong.
Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower toured Turnberry Scotland on a European trip with President Eisenhower and relatives. She asked Prestwick Airport shop for a Kennedy tartan kilt but the item was sold out. Her granddaughter Barbara bought a five shilling six pence charm bracelet instead.

A Washington columnist recalls receiving a 64 cent postage notice for a registered letter. The postman left the notice, no one was home, and the item returned to the post office. The columnist drove to the post office next morning to fetch what he hoped was a significant communication.

Weekend accidents killed nine in West Virginia six in traffic incidents and three by drowning. The toll for the year reached 260, up from 209 a year ago. Victims included James Miller and Audie Amos of Weston who drowned when a boat capsized on the West Fork River. Simmons and McClain survived. Kevin Toothman of Farmington drowned at Tygart Lake. Samuel Ford of Williamson, age 71, was killed on U S 52 by a car driven by Chief Claude Stowers. Jesse Hamric of Frametown died when his car overturned on West Virginia 16. Avis Beerman of Clay died near Befpre when a trailer detached from a moving vehicle.
