Attack Aug 7 Declares Heavy Losses Over Hanoi And Delta
On August 7 United States forces reported a record loss of seven aircraft in one day over the Communist nation near Hanoi with two Thunderchiefs shot down 50 and 60 miles north of the capital. Reliable sources say a gunship killed five civilians and wounded 15 in Can Tho during a government operation aided by American aircraft. In ground fighting a large Communist force retreated from a 1st Air Cavalry unit in the Central Highlands near the Cambodian border as air strikes continued through the night leaving U.S. forces to pursue the retreating enemy. American planes and helicopters pounded positions as smoke and dust hampered damage assessment.
