Owensboro Kentucky August 14 ten thousand spectators watched Rainey Bethea a 22 year old black man die at dawn on the gallows. A hood was ripped from his face as the crowd gathered souvenirs. Sheriff Florence Thompson a woman officiated and Arthur Hash pulled the lever to end the execution. Bethea had been convicted of assaulting a 70 year old white woman. He received last rites from Catholic priest Herman Lainmars.
