In Ironton Ohio on August 1 two men Mel Nef thirty five and Willard Hamlin fifty were held for grand jury action on murder charges in the slaying of Wilbur Boss Bias town marshal of Proctorville. Bias was killed when bullets felled him after he answered a disturbance call. A coroner's verdict held the two men responsible for the officer’s death.

Federal liquor tax unit nets four violators
Four men were held for federal court on liquor law violations and one automobile was confiscated after investigations by the federal alcohol tax unit with county officers. Coburn of Athens was arrested for possession of untaxed liquor and held for federal court. A chase ending at Bluefield saw a liquor laden car abandoned. the Chevrolet coupe and ten gallons of liquor were seized. In McDowell County W. P. Phillips of Hensley faced charges for operating a 30 gallon still with 60 gallons of mash and three quarts of liquor seized, and William Foster of Welch was held on 30 gallons of liquor possession. John Henry Smith, from Wyco area, posted bond for federal court on still and mash charges after being caught near a fire under the still.
