The Mississippi River surged southward with a record flood crest endangering Minnesota Wisconsin Iowa and Illinois. More than 19 000 left homeless in Minnesota and authorities feared 14 000 more in Wisconsin. National Guards police and volunteers worked on dikes as bulldozers built makeshift barriers along La Crosse and other communities. The crest was 16.7 feet and expected to reach 18 feet by Wednesday. Wisconsin Governor Knowles toured the flood zone.

A five day wildcat strike at the Joanne Coal Co mine near Rachel ends as about 230 miners return to work. United Mine Workers vice president Leonard Pankovich ordered the men back to their jobs. The United States plans to build a six man atomic powered submarine to explore for undersea oil and mineral wealth and to aid fishery research. The craft, costing about 7.3 million dollars, would be developed by Navy reactor chief Vice Admiral Hyman Rickover and the Atomic Energy Commission. It would cruise the continental shelf at depths over 1000 feet and open new methods for studying fish habits and migrations.

Plotter in Montreal commits suicide in jail
Gilles Le Gault, 31, named in the recent plot to blow up the Statue of Liberty, the Washington Monument and the Liberty Bell, died in his Montreal jail cell Sunday night. He reportedly was treated for a gash on his left wrist, receiving twelve stitches before his death.

UPI reports longtime South Carolina figure Olin DeWitt Johnston died of pneumonia at 68 after two major operations. A cotton picker turned lawyer and senator, he chaired the Senate Post Office and Civil Service Committee and backed working-class economic aims while often opposing civil rights measures. Funeral set for Tuesday at Southside Baptist Church in Spartanburg. His Senate term ends in 1968 with gubernatorial appointment to fill vacancy until 1966 elections.

Driver Flees Afoot In Mercer Hit and Run Case
Two men were arrested after a hit-and-run serious injury near a Mercer County home. Mrs Etta Hurst 68 of Montcalm was critically injured Sunday night on the way to church. One driver fled on foot after the crash then another man took the wheel and was chased by police. Charges filed include reckless driving driving while drunk resisting arrest and failing to yield for an emergency vehicle. Mrs Hurst remained in critical condition after emergency surgery.

Three In One Wreck Seven Die In State Traffic
Seven persons died in Easter weekend traffic accidents in West Virginia raising the year toll to 119 three deaths coming from a single car crash seven miles from Aurora Preston County near the Maryland line. Body of Second Man Recovered After Sailboat Tragedy
In Elkins the body of William A. Semones 50 was recovered from the Tygart Valley River near Elkins after a sailboat mishap that killed his companion Jesse F. Wade 42 of Morgantown. The two disappeared when their kayak like craft capsized over a 15 foot spillway during a Saturday outing witnessed by their wives. Wade received artificial respiration from a Forest Service employee but died at the hospital.
