Pilot Officer Lew W. Sheffler Killed in Action

Royal Canadian Air Force pilot Officer Lew W. Sheffler aged 24, son of H. R. Shef ler of Woodlawn Avenue, was killed in action on Tuesday April 14. He had served in England since October after transferring from Canada and previously trained as a student pilot in the United States Army Air Corps. A Woodrow Wilson High School graduate, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, the University of Alabama, and Beckley College, later working a year at Appalachian Electric Power. The Ottawa RCAF chief informed the family that a letter would follow, providing no death details.

Stimson Sees Near Readiness for U S Offensive

Navy's Gilbert Island Hero Home on Leave

Lt. Edward H. O’Hare, famed naval air ace, returns to Phoenix on leave with wife Rita Wooster of Muscatine Iowa. The 29-year-old officer, celebrated for downing six Japanese planes in one afternoon near the Gilbert Islands, seeks rest and family time while awaiting a Washington assignment. He plans to report April 24 but will spend most of his leave in the Salt River Valley.

Air Meeting At Ottawa in May

President Roosevelt and Canadian Prime Minister W L MacKenzie King announced a conference in Ottawa in early May. Representatives of all United Nations with air training programs will be invited to discuss united military efforts and extending air programs to train personnel for operating military aircraft. The statement also noted progress in pooling airplane production among the United Nations.

German Agents Plead Guilty in Federal Court

Louisville manufacturers George K Bodenschatz and his wife Viola pleaded guilty in federal court to unregistered Nazi agent charges. Bodenschatz, 49, is a brother of German Army Lieut. Gen. Karl Bodenschatz. The couple, free on $5,000 bond each, had been scheduled for an April 27 trial.

Plans Set For Sugar Rationing Registration In Raleigh County

Final plans were made at a conference with W R Fugitt of the local defense council and E M Ashworth county schools chief. Registration runs May 4 through May 7 with 3 to 6 pm hours on Mon Tue and Thu and a Wednesday half day. School dismisses early Wednesday to allow a full registration day. Site administrators will be principals and one room school teachers, guiding volunteer helpers. A meeting of Site Administrators is planned for May 20 at 4 pm for checks and questions. Instruction books arrive by April 29 and leftovers and reports will be collected the Friday after registration.

War Bulletins Across Fronts From London to Moscow

War bulletins report continued Allied air and naval activity against Germany and her allies. Soviet forces claim to have sunk a 10,000 ton German transport in the Barents Sea for a fourth time this week. British subs reportedly torpedoed an Italian transport in the Mediterranean. German authorities claim 35 hostages shot in Occupied France. A British submarine is said sunk in the Central Mediterranean by an Italian destroyer. Harry Hopkins met Churchill at No 10 Downing Street after talks with Oliver Lyttelton.

Troops, Wounded, Civilians Reported Missing on Bataan

The War Department said over 65,000 troops and civilians are unreported for more than a week on Bataan Peninsula, including about 35,000 combat troops, 5,500 sick or wounded, and roughly 25,000 civilians. Casualties in fighting expected to be heavy. Nurses evacuated to Corregidor. Japanese assault on Iloilo Panay faced by American Filipino forces. Japanese estimated at 8,000 with naval and air support.

Beckley Fire Insurance Rates Dropped After Reclassification

Beckley city fire protection facilities were reclassified by the West Virginia Inspection Bureau, dropping the city from eighth to seventh class. Insurance rates on all dwellings fall from 34 to 30 cents per $100, with similar cuts on other property. The change became effective April 15.
